KNEU 1250The push continues to prevent the spread of Quagga Mussels in the state of Utah. Over Pioneer Day weekend, law enforcement officers, biologists and other officials stopped and inspected thousands of boats at checkpoints in the state of Utah, including at checkpoints in and around the Uintah Basin. A total of 5,892 boats were inspected and citations were issued.
UDOT is trying to spread the word far and wide: Construction in Uintah County that will start the end of August will cause major delays on Highway 40. According to project information officer Nathan Clark, preparation will start the last week of August and work is scheduled to begin on August 30th.
USU Uintah Basin is welcoming new faculty members as the fall semester approaches. According to a press release issued Tuesday, Tabitha Cutright will be an instructor in the Department of Nursing and Cameron Cuch will be a lecturer in the Marketing, Strategy, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship Department at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.
It’s a mixed bag with the new unemployment numbers supplied by the Department of Workforce Services on a monthly basis. While Daggett County has struggled the most this year, June unemployment actually decreased from 4.5 to 4.2 percent. Duchesne County saw a slight tick up from 4.4 to 4.5 percent unemployment.
A fire that started Sunday afternoon is contained in Moffat County, 9 miles from the Utah/Colorado border. According to BLM Public Information Officer David Boyd, the Mile Marker 9 Fire is all on private land on the south side of Highway 40 burning in grass and brush. It was reported at 4pm on July 28th and crews have contained it to 90 acres.
Sometimes it takes members of the community to identify a need and step up to help. The BTA bus system has many stops throughout Vernal but not many of them have benches, a fact that the man behind a new bench initiative began to notice more and more after a one-stop ride on the bus with his little girl.
Construction work continues on Highway 40 from West Roosevelt to Gusher. “Work this week will include continued removal and replacement of the pedestrian ramps alongside US-40,” shares UDOT. “Additionally, crews will begin to lower utilities in preparation for upcoming asphalt work. Starting Monday, July 29th, the inside lanes of US 40 will be closed in order to prepare for work on the utilities.
For all those who are wanting to hunt this fall be sure to get registered for your Utah Hunter Education Program. Any person born after December 31, 1965 is obligated to complete the state-offered hunter education class. There are two ways to take the course. The first is to attend the instructor-led course that is held in a classroom.

High School Musical, Jr. opens on Wednesday night for one cast and Thursday night for the other and each performing on Friday and Saturday.
The Golden Age Center is celebrating 50 years of serving the Vernal area with festivities taking place today. The Golden Age Center was recently named the Government Business of the Year by the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce and it was discovered that the Center has been serving the Basin for half a century, a milestone worth celebrating.
The bodies of two fisherman at the center of a 10 day search were recovered on Sunday from Strawberry Reservoir. Brothers 70-year-old Jim Gardiner and 61-year-old Mark Gardiner were discovered missing on July 18th after 9-1-1 was called with a report of an unoccupied boat drifting near the shore of the reservoir with the boat motor still running.
Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office posted a warning on Thursday concerning the rainstorms that were to come over the weekend and it turned out it was justified. Deputies and county road crews spent Friday trying to help at least a dozen people get to safety after flash flooding resulted in a scary situation.
