Privacy Policy
Last updated August 21, 2026.
Basin Now is published by Evans Family Media in Vernal, Utah. This page explains, in plain language, what happens to your information when you read the paper, send us something, or sign up for the newsletter. We have tried to describe what the site actually does rather than what a privacy policy usually says.
While you read
We measure how many people read each story, which sections they visit, and roughly where in the world they are. We do this with two analytics tools — Google Analytics and Tandem Analytics — while we work out which one reports our readership more accurately. Between them they record the page you are on, the page that referred you, your approximate location from your IP address, and general details about your browser, screen size, and device.
We also keep our own counter of how many times each story is opened, used to pick the “most read” stories for the weekly newsletter. That counter is deliberately narrow: your address and browser are combined into a one-way fingerprint that exists only long enough to keep a refresh from counting twice, and is never written to disk. What we store is a daily total per story — a number, with nothing attached to it that could lead back to you.
We do not sell reader data, we do not share it with data brokers, and we do not build advertising profiles of individual readers.
When you send us something
Some parts of the site ask for information directly. We keep what you submit, and use it for the purpose you submitted it for:
- Contact and tip forms — your name, email, and message reach the newsroom and stay in our records so we can follow up.
- Event submissions — event details are reviewed by staff and published to the community calendar. Your contact details are kept for follow-up and are not published.
- Classified ads — the ad text is published. Your phone number and email are held back and are shown only to a reader who asks for them and clears an anti-spam check, which is there to keep automated scrapers from harvesting them.
- Newsletter — we keep your email address, your name if you give one, and whether you have confirmed. Every issue carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
Cookies
Our analytics tools set cookies to recognize a repeat visit from the same browser. Your browser can block or clear these at any time; the site works normally without them. We do not use cookies to track you across other websites.
Advertising
Ads on Basin Now are served from our own systems as ordinary images. They are chosen by where they sit on the page, not by anything we know about you, and they do not set cookies or follow you to other sites.
We publish an ads.txt file naming the partners authorized to sell our advertising inventory. If we ever run ads placed by those partners, they may set their own cookies — we will update this page before that happens.
Opting out
You can turn off analytics for yourself by using your browser’s private mode, by blocking cookies for this site, or with any of the widely available tracker-blocking extensions — we do not work around them. To stop newsletter email, use the unsubscribe link in any issue. To ask what we hold about you, or to have it deleted, contact us using the details below and we will do our best to help.
Children
Basin Now is a general-audience news site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes
If what we collect changes, we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
