Be sure to ignite that wonder by coming out to the Moffat County Balloon Festival. For August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, if the weather permits, there will be hot air balloons every morning at 6:30am. Plan to spend Saturday exploring Craig, Colorado.
All those who would like to submit public comment on the proposed Uinta Basin Railway have only a few days left to do so. Starting on July 15th, the Surface Transportation Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis gathered public input in person during 6 meetings over 5 days traveling 1100 miles, making stops in Fort Duchesne, Craig, Price, Roosevelt, Vernal, and ending in downtown Salt Lake City. There was a good mix of opinions shared, according to Tammy Champo, spokeswoman for the 7 County Infrastructure Coalition.
Ashley National Forest is asking, once again, that vandals stop shooting road signs within the Forest. “Many of these signs are placed to provide for public safety,” shares the announcement. In the photo provided, it is clear that there is no backstop for the bullet making it a serious hazard as the bullet could travel a long distance and ultimately injure someone.
You probably didn’t know that up until this summer, the Book Cliffs was home to a famous Utahn. At 31-years-old, Xina(Zena) was the oldest black bear ever documented in the state of Utah and when she was found in her den passed away from natural causes in June, there were many in the wildlife research community and beyond saddened to hear of the loss.
The Vernal Regional Airport continues to hit exciting milestones. Administration recently learned that thanks to the 2018 numbers, the airport officially qualifies for an increase in FAA entitlement funds. For many years, the airport has qualified for $150,000 dollars in these funds annually but thanks to the increase in flights, those FAA entitlement funds will jump to one million dollars starting in October.

Cody Barton was a third-round draft choice after playing for the University of Utah and has been “in the middle of just about everything” since camp started with the Seahawks.
It is crazy to think about but for several Utah archery hunters, bull elk and buck mule deer hunts start Saturday, August 17th. While not as common as firearms injuries, the Division of Wildlife Resources has tips to keep archery hunters safe. Remember the basics, like know your target, know what is beyond, and don’t leave arrows uncovered.
Public lands is a hot topic in the Uintah Basin and beyond and a man running for Salt Lake City Mayor is shining a major light on the topic in the form of a lawsuit over public lands access. Dr. Rainer Huck and his co-plaintiff John Anderson issued a press release this week over their filing of the American Public Lands Equal Access Lawsuit in Federal District Court against the Bureau of Land Management.
The Uintah Basin in Celebration is going strong throughout the week. Many of the pageants are complete, defining the faces for the 2019-2020 Basin royalty. Miss Uintah Basin is Lynlee Labrum with the first attendant being Aspen Sims.
Dinosaur National Monument has a wide variety of people that visit throughout the year. Recently the monument hosted a collection of rangers, which included law enforcement officers, administrators, maintenance workers, educators, and scientists as part of Colorado State University’s International Protected Area Managers Course.
For Utah it is a common endeavor to go hunting. For those people that are over 12 years old and aren’t sure if they would like hunting, there is a unique program that gives you a chance to try it. Through the Trial Hunting Program you can accompany a licensed hunter who is 21 or older on their hunting experience.
Just as consistent as school starting again in the fall, the BackPack Project is getting ready to help the community. Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce reports that that they have received the donated backpacks. Now it is time to fill them! Community members are asked that while buying school supplies for their own children or grandchildren, purchase a few extra items and donate them to the BackPack Project.
