KNEU 1250The Uintah Basin Energy Summit has grown to be a must attend event for those with an interest in the energy industry and this year was no exception. The event was held Wednesday and Thursday at the Uintah Conference Center in Vernal. “The Uintah Basin Energy Summit was once again a huge success with over 500 people in attendance,” shares event organizer and Uintah County Economic Development Director Sylvia Wilkins.
The Business Committee of the Ute Indian Tribe announced Wednesday their decision that they will be rescinding the 2018 Fire Restriction Order. According to the press announcement, the 2018 fire restriction order will be rescinded effective Friday, August 31st. The announcement to rescind the restriction order was signed on August 28th. The original restriction order stated that the wildfire prevention program is in place to reduce the number of person-caused fires and prevent damage to natural resources on Indian land. While the restrictions will no longer in place, all are urged to continue using extreme caution with fire while outdoors. The risk of wildfire is never really gone.
The empty rooms of the Weston Lamplighter Inn have long been rumored to be haunted. If you’ve ever wanted to see for yourself, a special charity event coming up in October will give you that opportunity under the spookiest conditions possible. A group of community leaders and volunteers are organizing the Hotel Vernal Haunt and Ghost Tours to raise funds for four local charities: Ashley Valley Food Pantry, Forever Forward Services, Vernal Theatre: LIVE Foundation, and Sub-For-Santa. The event offers two fright experiences. The Fear Haunt allows you to explore the depths of the historic Hotel Vernal, also known as the Weston Lamplighter Inn. The Ghost Tours relive actual ghost sightings and other paranormal activity reported when the hotel was in its prime. These events will be offered for 10 nights starting on October 13th. The Daggett County Commission has initiated a study to see what options are available for a developing subdivision. On the east end of Daggett County, a group of 7 potential subdivisions of 143 lots each are being explored but at present are facing issues in developing because it has no water or sewer available.
Thankfully no one was seriously hurt on Tuesday when a vehicle crashed into a Uintah County residence. According to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, a 23-year-old Vernal man drove his truck into a house in Uintah County on Tuesday afternoon and the house sustained serious damage.
Red Leaf Resources, Inc. announced on Wednesday a partnership they say will be a major benefit to their Uintah County oil shale project. The ‘strategic technical alliance’ is with Hatch, a global leader in engineering and technology development. According to the Red Leaf news release, Hatch has been involved in the overall technology development of the Red Leaf oil shale projects, including the development of the EcoShale technology.
Local agencies are pitching in as the Vernal Police Department continues their Pedestrian Safety Operation for the beginning of the school year. On Wednesday, Utah Highway Patrol took a turn. “We assisted with their effort to provide for the safety of pedestrians within the City,” shares UHP Sgt. Kellie Oaks. “Many violators were stopped for failing to yield to pedestrians within a crosswalk.”
With hunting season here, forest officials are sharing campfire safety reminders. The Forest Service is reminding hunters and campers of important practices. Clear any fire site down to the bare soil. Be sure there is containment of the fire using a fire ring of rocks or stones or better yet utilize an existing metal fire ring. Build fires away from trees, branches, steep slopes, dry grass, or leaves.
The halls of the new Union High School are officially broke in with the first week of school a success. Duchesne County School District Student Services Director Scott Forsyth reports that the transition to the new high school has been smooth and students are showing great pride and respect for their new educational home.
A human case of West Nile Virus has been reported in the TriCounty Health District. The Utah Department of Health reported this week that there have been 28 new positive mosquito pools in Utah bringing the total to 108 so far this year. Two new human cases were reported this week, one from the Bear River District and one from the TriCounty Health District.
There’s only a month left in the 2018 professional rodeo season and a local cowboy is showing he is a force to be reckoned with as the biggest mover in the PRCA/RAM World Standings. It was announced this week that roper Rhen Richard jumped 10 spots from 22nd to 12th place thanks to his latest string of wins. This puts Rhen in a good position to hopefully find himself in the top 15 in the PRCA in hopes of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo coming up.
A cougar has created quite a stir in Uintah County after multiple sightings near homes. The sightings have been shared around social media this week with many asking if wildlife officials have been notified. DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby confirms that the Division of Wildlife Resources is aware of the issue and is monitoring the situation for further developments.
