KNEU 1250Uintah County Emergency Management is spreading the word of a scheduled phone alert Basin residents will receive along with people around the country. In cooperation with the FCC, FEMA is conducting a national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert System.
It’s National Family Meal Month and local health educators are encouraging Basin residents to make family meal time a priority. Ashley Stegeman, USU Extension educator over the Food Sense program, has a list of reasons why Basin families should invest in family meal time and how to make it easier.
It’s official. Proposed fishing rules have been approved by the Utah Wildlife Board to start in 2019. The first big change is that anglers can now fish with corn as bait. Until 2016, Utah was the only state in the West where corn was not allowed. The Division of Wildlife Resources conducted a poll of anglers in Utah and found that 70 percent favored the change to allow corn.
After a six-year environmental review process, Enefit American Oil is welcoming the BLM decision to approve the applications connected to a utility corridor project in Uintah County. The BLM decision issued on Wednesday allows for the extension of utility lines across a small portion of federal land to serve the company’s oil shale project.
Three seats on the Uintah School District’s Board of Education are up for election in November and will appear on the ballots within applicable precincts. In District #1, voters in the Davis, Jensen, and Naples precincts will choose between Harlan “Scoot” Wilkins and Lori Gillman. In District #2, voters in the Ashley and several Vernal precincts will choose between Dave W. Chivers and incumbent candidate Kevin Dickson.
While the rooms at the Weston Lamplighter Inn have been empty for nearly two decades there was a time they were bouncing with activity. ‘Hotel Vernal’ opened in 1947 on east Main Street and for decades was ‘the place to be’ in Vernal. “The hotel hosted plush banquets, large weddings, prom pictures, and famous guests,” shares Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion.
The Bureau of Land Management issued their Record of Decision on seven right-of-way applications from Enefit American Oil on their proposed utility corridor project in Uintah County. The decision, announced on Wednesday, approved the applications following the BLM’s review of comments and public feedback received during a 60-day comment period.
The cooling temperatures and increased relative humidity have assisted fire suppression efforts across the state but the U.S. Forest Service AirFire Research Team is still providing smoke outlook reports for concerned populations. The current outlook for Utah states that smoke generated from the Pole Creek, Bald Mountain, and Mirror Lake Complex Fires is “expected to transport along the wind direction toward areas east and south of the fires, including the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, Price, Roosevelt, and Vernal areas.”
A successful partnership is something to celebrate and that’s exactly what took place on Wednesday in Roosevelt. Forty years ago, Life Flight responded to their very first Uintah Basin patient transport at the hospital in Roosevelt. Life Flight was stationed out of the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City and that first flight to Roosevelt was the beginning of an era.
Work continues on multiple planning efforts in Daggett County. According to the Commissioner’s monthly update, the Master Trails Plan remains in process in Daggett County. The creation of the plan is funded through a Utah State Parks and PCIB grant. “There will be more to come as this process develops,” shares the Daggett County Commission.
A Missouri man wanted for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender was arrested at a Rock Springs area playground last week. According to Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Cody Lynn Cotter was taken into custody by deputies after residents reported a suspicious person in the area around the playground. When approached by deputies, Cotter reported he had come into the area that day by bus seeking work. A routine check showed that Cotter was wanted in Missouri for Failure to Register on the Missouri sex offender registry. Sheriff Mike Lowell clarified that there were no children playing at the playground at the time of Cotter’s arrest. His return to Missouri to face charges there is pending.
Economic development is a crucial part of any municipality and Roosevelt City is doing their part to have a successful Economic Development Committee. The City announced last week the need for volunteer local businessmen and women interested in serving with the group of community members whose focus is on helping the economy thrive.
