It’s official. Proposed fishing rules have been approved by the Utah Wildlife Board to start in 2019. The first big change is that anglers can now fish with corn as bait. Until 2016, Utah was the only state in the West where corn was not allowed. The Division of Wildlife Resources conducted a poll of anglers in Utah and found that 70 percent favored the change to allow corn. A pilot study took place and after two years, officers reported that there were no negative impacts observed from anglers using corn as bait. With the state board’s approval, corn can now be used in any Utah fishing water
starting January 1st.
Another important change is that the daily lake trout limit on Flaming Gorge will be increased to 12 fish. A growing population of smaller lake trout has caused problems for anglers as they compete with salmon and rainbow trout for food. If the number of lake trout is reduced, there will be more kokanee and rainbows for anglers to catch.
