KNEU 1250Moffat County Commissioners passed a resolution this week to officially oppose Colorado’s Proposition 112. Proposition 112 focuses on minimum distance requirements for new oil, gas, and fracking projects in Colorado and the ballot initiative is meeting opposition from oil and gas supporters.
One local elementary school is setting an example worth emulating. The theme for Maeser Elementary this year is “Kindness Begins With Me” and a teacher at the school says they are already living up to that mantra.
It’s more than just enjoying a tour of Chambers of Commerce throughout the region; the annual Dina-Mites Goodwill Trip made a positive impact as the group spread positive information about the Uintah Basin. This year the Vernal Chamber Dinah-Mite members visited Chambers of Commerce in Flaming Gorge, Rock Springs, Green River, Kemmerer, Logan, Garden City and Evanston.
TriCounty Health Department recommends citizens receive the flu shot annually and they are backed up by a local family practice doctor. Dr. Karl Breitenbach is the TriCounty Health Medical Advisor and he recommends getting a flu shot every year to develop a higher level of immunity to the virus and to have realistic expectations in that the shot is not always effective though people become more and more immune after each shot is received.
An annual 5K will benefit a deserving family who has spent years serving the community and who are fighting to overcome a major tragedy. The organizers of the Gobbler Thanksgiving 5K announced on Thursday that their race will spread some “Gobbler Love” to CalDee and Kathy Reynolds of Vernal. The Reynolds were the victims of a home invasion last month that took place in the early morning hours and during which the intruder attacked CalDee, Kathy, and their son.
Local law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions were represented during a special meeting at the Utah State Capitol on Wednesday where U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke on Utah’s success with the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. Sessions praised Utah law enforcement for reducing crime by 8 percent in 2017.
Rural communities are certainly not out to destroy themselves but, as it turns out, are often their own worst enemy. It was an interesting gathering of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday as concepts from “13 Ways to Kill Your Community” were explored. Joe McKea, from Uintah County’s Human Resources Department, made the presentation based on the book by Doug Griffiths.
Roosevelt City’s annual Fall Festival rapidly approaches, providing yet another family friendly and fun activity for the Roosevelt community. The Fall Festival is scheduled for October 12th from 3:30 to 6:00pm and once again it will be held at the Old Mill Park where there will be a pumpkin decorating contest with four age groups, a fall photo backdrop for family pictures and a gathering of vendors.
Farm land in Uintah and Duchesne County is considered some of the best in the state for hunting pheasants and quail this season and local youth will get the first crack at the birds. The state is hosting its annual youth pheasant and quail hunt on October 13th through the 15th. The Division of Wildlife Resources has arranged to release over 1,000 pheasants around the state on wildlife management areas and Walk-In Access areas before the hunt to increase the chance young hunters have at taking a bird.
The flash flood warnings issued by National Weather Service are being taken seriously in the Uintah Basin, especially in Duchesne County where flash flooding has already been an issue with the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar. According to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, last month tied for the fourth driest September on record and under these dry conditions the ground becomes hydrophobic and increases the likelihood of flash flooding during heavy rain.
A Downtown Flood Mitigation and Storm Drainage Project is under consideration tonight at the Vernal City Council meeting as funding options will be discussed. During heavy rain events in recent years, areas of street, curb, and sidewalk flood and in some instances the water even enters structures on Vernal’s Main Street. Last year, the Utah Department of Transportation initiated a storm water study and the findings supported the proposed project. UDOT committed $1.2 million dollars in funds that are now available and has requested that Vernal City begin the project as soon as Spring 2019. If the project moves forward, UDOT will delay the Highway 40 pavement overlay project making it a priority for the Vernal City Council to make a decision on the project. Vernal City Council is expected to decide tonight whether they will move forward with an application to the Community Impact Board for $1.4 million dollars to finish funding the project in a $1.2 million dollar grant, $200,000 dollar loan combination.
Changes to the 2019-2020 fishing rules includes more than being allowed to now fish with corn and keeping more lake trout. A rule stating that anglers may not have more than one daily limit of fish in their possession while fishing on Flaming Gorge and Strawberry Reservoirs has been lifted. Some anglers who take the time to travel to Flaming Gorge and Strawberry Reservoirs want to spend more than one day fishing before coming home, shares the board announcement.
