KNEU 1250Funding for public transit has been an ongoing topic of discussion in Uintah County and was among the topics on the agenda of the most recent City/County meeting. The funding of BTA has been unclear since Proposition 5 failed in Uintah County during the 2017 election with about 41 percent of Uintah County voters casting ballots FOR the transportation tax that would have helped fund the bus transit system and about 59 percent voting against the tax.
The students of Ashley Elementary were the recipients of a very special and grand gesture yesterday thanks to the kindness of another local school. Lapoint Elementary had a Veteran’s Day Assembly last month where they learned about Utah native Colonel Gail Halvorsen, a WWII pilot who was dubbed the “The Candy Bomber” during the Berlin Airlift. “[The student council] taught their peers about how that related to our acts of kindness and explained that we were going to candy bomb another school in our district, Ashley Elementary, in the same way that Gail candy bombed the children in Germany during the events surrounding World War II,” explains Lapoint Principal Dennis Atkin. After their assembly, students of Lapoint Elementary started to write kindness notes to their peers at Ashley Elementary and on Monday, these acts of kindness culminated in the exciting event where local pilots Clark Hall and Chris Laris and Principal Atkin flew over the playground field at Ashley and dropped parachutes like “The Candy Bomber” to the excited students of Ashley Elementary. Each student received a candy and a paper ornament with a kind note from a student at Lapoint Elementary. The students at Lapoint Elementary were able to experience the excitement from their own school while watching a Facebook Live feed filmed from the sky. Well done to the students involved for setting such a genuine example of kindness and goodness!
A Christmas gift to the city of Roosevelt came in the form of the results of the latest financial audit. The audit highlights that Roosevelt City is in fine financial health. The city has $5.1 million dollars in assets available in the city’s governmental funds, with $1.7 million dollars in the sewer fund, as well as $2.9 million dollars available in the water fund.
The 2018 Nursing graduates from Utah State University Uintah Basin have set a wonderful standard of accomplishment for those seeking out employment through education. “Over the past few years, USU and UBTech have worked together to create a strong foundation for nursing students,” shares USU-Uintah Basin Executive Director James Taylor.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an updated advisement for U.S. consumers to restrain from eating romaine lettuce harvested from the Central Coastal growing regions of northern and central California. TriCounty Health Director Jordan Mathis says locals should take the warnings to heart. If you do not know where the romaine is from, do not eat it.
It was a snowy, slick weekend around the state of Utah that kept Utah Highway Patrol busy. With winter weather more widespread, even the most seasoned drivers should review winter travel safety practices and take them seriously. Highway Patrol Sgt. Kellie Oaks has plenty of tips for winter travel. “We would encourage everyone to plan ahead,” shares Sgt. Oaks.
The holiday season has most hearts full of love and service but that doesn’t mean there aren’t grinches lurking about. “Law enforcement has been responding to an increased number of thefts,” shares Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell. “People should always lock their homes and vehicles and not leave valuables visible.”
Snow is here! Local city street crews are prepared and ready for whatever may come but are hoping for the cooperation of residents when it comes to snow removal. Residents and businesses need to remove snow on adjacent sidewalks and away from fire hydrants as well as remove vehicles, trailers, and trash containers from the roadways so snow crews can scrape the snow thoroughly and effectively, shares Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is imploring fishermen to head to Flaming Gorge Dam for an event 10 years in the making. The Western Area Power Administration and Bureau of Reclamation are planning on two days of rest on Saturday, December 1st and Saturday, December 15th. What this means for fishermen is that flows coming out of Flaming Gorge dam will remain stable and make for improved fishing success.
A Duchesne City couple is doing their part to spread Christmas cheer this year. Robin and Dewayne Calkins have always loved Christmas, with Robin admitting to be a straight up Hallmark Channel junkie. This year they’ve channeled their holly jolly enthusiasm into planning the 1st annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Festival to be held tomorrow at Wallace Park on Duchesne’s Main Street.
To some, the Christmas season is underway on the first day of December. To others, it officially begins when they attend the annual Christmas concert for the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus. This year, that happens to be the same day!
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the mother of an inmate that committed suicide in the Duchesne County Jail two years ago. According to a KSL report, Melany Zoumadakis filed the suit on Friday claiming that her daughter, 25-year-old Tanna Jo Fillmore, was denied prescription medication for a 9-day period leading up to her death, even though the jail had prior knowledge of Fillmore’s mental illness.
