KNEU 1250Vernal City Council held a quick meeting on Wednesday night. Approval of the contract with G&H Garbage to take over solid waste collection services this spring was the main action item taken. RDT, the current provider, also bid for the contract and while both providers bid below the existing rate, G&H had the low bid. RDT’s contract ends March 31st and G&H will take over on April 1st.
Stakeholders from Duchesne County met with Governor Herbert and other state partners on Tuesday at the state capital building. The meeting focused on Duchesne County’s economic development plan and how it ties into the Governor’s 25,000 jobs in rural Utah initiative.
The Vernal Youth City Council was introduced and sworn in on Wednesday night at the Vernal City Council meeting. The group commits to a year of learning about local government and organizing service projects to benefit the community. Youth in attendance included Emily Siddoway, Rachel Allred, Jackson Liesik, Josh Shipton, Gavin Gunnells, Tavin Bru, Eoin O’Hearn, Quinten James, and Derek Mansfield.
Cancer has far reaching effects as many individuals and families in the Uintah Basin already know. A group that is doing their part to provide support to locals affected by cancer is adding Vernal to their meeting rotation.
It’s no secret to locals of the Basin that there is plenty of breathtaking scenery and outdoor recreation to make the area a vacation destination. The folks at the Travel Channel are apparently in on the news as they’ve included Vernal among their list of the 10 best small towns in the United States for big vacations.
A man in Uintah County has been charged with 2nd degree felony theft and multiple counts of assaulting a police officer during an arrest that took place last month. 22-year-old Gregory Lee Augustus allegedly stole a 2003 dark green Jaguar on or about December 13th from the business, We Buy Junk Cars.
Craig Police Department is getting results with their weekly warrant announcements. Last week, Warrant Wednesday informed the public that 63-year-old David Oberg had a warrant out for his arrest.
Naples City attracted community members from around the Basin with their epic fireworks show on Sunday night to ring in the New Year. With such a great response from the community, the hope is to make it an annual tradition.
The names of Randall Flatlip, Jerry Flatlip, and Larson Rondeau have been in the news enough the last month that even newcomers to the Basin are likely familiar with their upcoming trial on charges of raping a 9-year-old Uintah County girl. The dates for that trial, now to be held in Salt Lake County since the mistrial last month in Summit County, have not yet been announced
Thanks to live air quality data for the Uintah Basin, provided by the USU Bingham Research Center, any Basin resident can stay up to date on air quality. So far this winter, air quality has not been cause for much concern but that doesn’t mean it won’t be as the winter rolls on.
2017 held unique challenges for Daggett County and County Commissioners Slaugh, Lytle, and Asay offered their perspective moving forward in the County’s latest newsletter. “We are challenged with the financial fallout of the Jail closing,” shared the Commissioners.
The transition of public officials has taken place for local cities. Vernal City held their swearing in ceremony of the newly elected officials at noon on Tuesday at Vernal City Hall. Mayor Doug Hammond was sworn in and incumbent council members Bert Clark and Ted Munford were sworn in to continue their service.
