KNEU 1250The Utah Department of Transportation announced their construction projects on Monday for 2018. According to their press release, the projects will widen Highway 40 in two locations and repave areas of other local highways. The addition of passing lanes to Highway 40 is the largest of the projects listed.
A busy stretch of Highway 40 was the scene of a serious accident in Vernal on Thursday afternoon. According to Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell, a westbound motorcycle was carrying one male and one female adult passenger on Highway 40 when it collided with a car.
A better wayfinding system may be in the future for Uintah County thanks to an extensive collaborative and cooperative effort between multiple agencies.

Measures are being taken to mitigate the financial loss to Daggett County after having the Daggett County Jail closed in 2017. Pending Governor Herbert’s signature, the Utah Legislature allocated $100,000 dollars to mitigate the losses due to losing the State Corrections Contract to house inmates. The Legislature also allocated $25,000 dollars towards Daggett County’s Centennial Project to improve their rodeo grounds for the upcoming Centennial Celebration.
A competency evaluation is underway in a case of a Uintah County man arrested February 28th in Salt Lake City and charged with 3rd Degree Felony Enticing of a Minor by Internet or Text Message. Court documents outline a disturbing correspondence by text message between 30-year-old Donald Flayne Massey and a 10-year-old North Carolina boy.
Dinosaur now has its own marijuana dispensary open for business on Brontosaurus Blvd. While Moffat County has a ban on this type of establishment, a ballot measure passed in Dinosaur over a year ago allows for the business within Dinosaur city limits. Marijuana became legal in Colorado in 2012 with the voter approved Amendment 64.
Uintah High School represented very well at competition this month with three Uintah seniors being named Sterling Scholars for the Northeast Region. Lindsay Seitz was named Region Sterling Scholar in Visual Arts. Lindsay is the daughter of Gordon and Jill Seitz.
Twelve students from Altamont High School competed at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference last Tuesday. Rozalon Rowley and Layla Jenson received a bronze medal. The team of Hailey Braman and Shylee Miles, the team of Kinly Panas and Kayda Anderson, and the team of Wyatt Jessen and Riley Braman each received silver medals for their projects.
The Vernal Elks Lodge is the place to be on Saturday nights. Their weekly Dinner and Bingo is finding great success in supporting the causes the Elks Lodge contributes to throughout the year. In fact, in just the last 8 weeks they have raised over $5,000 dollars for local charities. “It has been a success so far,” shares the Elks Lodge.
Uintah High School has a wide variety of clubs and extracurriculars, hopefully enough to help any student find a place to make friends and belong. A new group at the high school is aimed at helping girls during what is often a challenging stage of life.
