KNEU 1250State lines don’t get in the way of law enforcement agencies offering each other support. Last week, Uintah County Sheriff’s Office and Vernal Police Department assisted the Rangely Police Department on a random drug search at the Rangely High School.
Multiple Uintah Basin cities and agencies received awards at the 2018 Annual ‘Rural Water Association of Utah’ Conference held in St. George earlier this year. Simplot Phosphates took home the coveted trophy for ‘Best Water in Utah’. A panel of judges performed a blind taste test based on clarity, taste, and smell of water and Simplot was selected as the winner among many entries.
The Vernal City Police Department annual awards banquet recognizes the accomplishments of the officers during the previous year. Among the awards presented were the following: Officer Ryan Cannon was awarded a Lifesaving Commendation for saving the life of a stabbing victim last May.
Uintah High School represented very well at competition this month with three Uintah seniors being named Sterling Scholars for the Northeast Region and four being named runner-ups. Spencer Day was awarded the runner-up title for Region English Sterling Scholar. Spencer is the son of Nicholas and Cynthia Day.
UDOT’s list of construction projects for the Uintah Basin include more than additional passing lanes between Bridgeland and Myton on Highway 40. Other projects include the following: Crews will repave approximately 13 miles of U.S. 191 from near the Duchesne/Carbon County line to the Jones Hollow turnoff in Indian Canyon. Work on that project will start this summer and finish in the fall.
The Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra is wrapping up a very successful second season with their spring concert being held tomorrow night at the Vernal Middle School. Season 2 started off with new recruits and several months of practice leading up to their fall concert in November. Soon after, the group began preparing for an unbelievable opportunity, a music festival to be held in March at Abravanel Hall.
An original proposal that was shut down to pipe water from Flaming Gorge to Colorado’s Front Range is back in new form, this time proposing water be piped from the Green River near Brown’s Park. What is nicknamed the “Million Pipeline” is hitting roadblocks and growing resistance.
Vernal City is considering adding curbside recycling as an option for Vernal City residents. Recyclops is a recycling program that has been introduced to the Vernal area by a private firm. It is now providing curbside service and is gaining customers with participants paying a monthly fee for curbside pickup in plastic trash bags. During the City Council meeting on March 21st, Ryan Smith informed the council about his business providing curbside recycling of paper, plastic, cardboard, and metal.
Last month TriCounty Health promoted a national day of activism aimed at empowering youth to stand up against Big Tobacco and “Kick Butt.” Kick Butts Day was observed on March 21st and Uintah and Duchesne County Youth Coalitions planned events in local schools to educate peers on the dangers of tobacco use.
A semi tanker rollover on Highway 40 closed both directions of Highway 40 on Wednesday morning. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 7:10am near the Strawberry UDOT sheds at milepost 42.
Uintah County fire crews have been busy since the spring burn window opened up on March 30th. According to Uintah County Fire Marshal Jeremy Raymond, crews have handled multiple fires since and wind has been a common denominator in the spread of each fire. A fire in Tridell quickly got out of control on Saturday when the wind picked up in the afternoon.
A judge has refused the Motions to Dismiss filed in the upcoming Flatlip/Rondeau trial. The defense for the three men awaiting trial for the alleged rape of a 9-year-old Uintah County girl in 2016 filed separate motions earlier this year to dismiss the rape case against the men.
