KNEU 1250The efforts of the American Red Cross are definitely not a mystery to the general public. They hold about 500 blood drives every day. Part of the effort is because less than 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood or platelets while 6.8 million people are in need of blood in the United States alone.
USU and Evans Family Media are once again combining resources to improve the overall quality of life for residents in the Uintah Basin. The start of that union became the USU’s Marriage and Family program that ran weekly during USU’s semesters with Dr. David Law, teaching ways to strengthen marriages and families.
In a press release issued Friday, the Uintah Fire District announced that they have received a grant that will enable the district to get three new fire trucks. The Fire District presented the project to the Community Impact Board last week in hopes of replacing outdated fire trucks throughout Uintah County. CIB Board Member Dean Baker made a motion to approve the project with 100 percent grant and Senator Ron Winterton seconded the motion.
The data for September drilling is providing a mixed message of information that might leave people scratching their heads as to what it means. The Uintah Basin Small Business Development Center shares that on the positive side there were wells drilled in Uintah County for Natural Gas for the first time in 4 years.
The EPA announced this week that they have awarded a $9.7 million dollar grant to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality to improve air quality in two parts of the state: the Uinta Basin and Salt Lake City. “Utah DEQ has demonstrated consistent leadership in working with local interests to make progress on air quality challenges and enhance public health,” shares EPA Regional Administrator Gregory Sopkin.
Every month the Daggett County Commission shares the latest with the county, keeping citizens and those interested in Daggett County up to date. This month, the commissioners invite the community to offer names of solitary residents in Daggett County that could benefit from welfare checks. “Our close community wants to care for each other,” shares the commissioners.
Dinosaur National Monument has been actively involved in the research of Monarch butterflies. In fact, if you visit their Facebook page you will see many posts featuring helpful information, wonderful volunteers, and exciting events all centered on the Monarch.
While most people are used to recognizing and shutting down phone scammers, a new scam is capable of rattling even the most hardened of call takers. Vernal Police shared on Thursday that there is a new scam area residents need to be aware of. “Calls are being made to citizens from a phone number coming from Mexico, and in the initial phase of the phone call a girl can be heard crying,” explains Vernal PD.
The time of monsters and candy is fast approaching, as the excitement of Halloween builds. Locally there are many great spooky activities, perhaps most highly anticipated being the Hotel Vernal Haunt. This fundraiser for local non-profit charities has quickly become a crowd favorite for the Basin and is looking forward to dishing out scares for a good cause.
Monday’s ribbon cutting for the community bench project in Vernal was a celebration of the community led initiative and those that made it happen. What started with one person seeing a need for benches at BTA bus stops, culminated in many businesses and people joining together to make it happen.
The Uintah County Library’s Fall Reading Program was the Hogwarts House Cup contest, with individuals living their dream of being sorted into either Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Gryffindor. The points have been tallied and the house cup goes to…. Gryffindor with 1415 points total.
A first of its kind, a Health Fair is being held in Roosevelt this month aimed at educating the public on safe alternatives to using opiates. “Local statistics show an increase of opioid deaths of 80 percent in the Duchesne County area,” shares prevention specialist with Northeastern Counseling Tammy Meacham.
