KNEU 1250Residents of the Uintah Basin are showing their support for those serving in the military by nearly filling to capacity the free concert by Stellar Brass ensemble of the United States Air Force Academy Band this Friday. Air Force Bands got its start in 1917 when 14 members set foot on French soil with instruments purchased from their lieutenant’s personal funds.
Local budding musicians had an amazing opportunity to learn from a world class conductor this week. Dr. Cheung(Chung) Chau(Chow) is the director of orchestral studies at Utah Valley University and is the music director of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. He also serves as the music director of a symphony in Poland and previously as a music director, cello performer, and guest conductor all over the world.
Uintah Basin high school students looking for college scholarships are in luck. Representatives of the state will be coming to Roosevelt on October 15th to inform the community about the Regents’ Scholarship, a merit-based award for seniors that can be used towards education at nearly every school in Utah.
Another organization is looking out for single moms pursuing higher education. The Stella H. Oaks Foundation has committed to donate a total of $75,000 dollars, split up over 5 years, to the UBTech Foundation to assist single mothers with expenses as they obtain an education. Officials from the Oaks Foundation were pleased to learn of the scholarships already offered to single mothers through Allred’s Landscaping and were happy to further support the cause.
The Division of Wildlife Resources says October is a hot time for fishing and has named a Uintah Basin reservoir as the place to be. Big Sandwash Reservoir is located north of Roosevelt and offers rainbow trout and yellow perch, two types of fish that are easier to fish. The waterbody also has smallmouth bass there for the catching.
It’s the end of an amazing era with the final Uintah High School Hi-Lites choir concert scheduled for this Thursday. During the concert, the Hi-Lites name will be retired and a new name for the show choir will be announced. If you haven’t had any ties to Hi-Lites you may be wondering what the big deal is but to those that have been involved through the years the announcement is full of emotion.
Fall cleanup just got a lot easier as the open burn window for Duchesne County has officially started. The burn window will run from October 1st through October 31st. As a reminder, if you live within Roosevelt City limits a burn permit is not required but you do need to contact Central Dispatch at 435-722-4558 before you burn.
The Duchesne-Roosevelt Ranger District of the Ashley National Forest is getting ready to start implementing prescribed burns as the weather and burn conditions allow.
Public discussion concerning Proposition 4 has definitely been on the up tick as the day to vote is drawing nearer. Uintah School Board wants everyone to be informed as to what Proposition 4 is about and what it will be used for.
An arrest was made in the bank robberies that took place about a week apart last month in western Colorado. According to a press release from the Rifle Police Department, Rudy Cardenas was arrested on the morning of September 27th at a motel in the Denver Metro area by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
Dinosaur National Monument is embracing a new National Park Service policy. According to a press release issued on Monday, starting today, October 1st, visitors to Dinosaur National Monument will be allowed to use e-bikes where traditional bicycles are allowed. “Bicycles and e-bikes are allowed on paved and unpaved roads that are open to the public,” shares the announcement. “Bicycles and e-bikes are not allowed on any trails in the monument.
The Utah Department of Health announced their findings to date of the investigation into vaping-related lung injury in the state. As of Monday, September 30th, 71 cases of vaping-related lung injury have been reported and 10 additional cases are under review. Given the evidence, the Department of Health has announced that “vaping THC cartridges or ‘carts’ are the likely driver of the outbreak of severe lung injury and as such the Department of Health is recommending that people do not vape THC cartridges until more is known.
