KNEU 1250The Rotary Club of Vernal is holding their annual Winter Coat Drive. They are gathering new and gently used coats of all sizes and for all ages. Residents of the community who wish to donate can take any coats, gloves and scarves to Davis Food and Drug, Smith’s Food and Drug, Soda Poppin’, Vernal Christian Church, or Uintah County Library until November 7th.
The Treasurer for the ‘Friends of Uintah and Daggett Counties Children’s Justice Center’ was arrested on Wednesday after an investigation into the handling of the organization’s account revealed unauthorized charges and withdrawals dating back nearly 10 years. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause filed in 8th District Court, 41-year-old Michelle Lyn Coon was arrested on the offense of felony Theft and was booked into Uintah County Jail. The probable cause statement provides the account of an officer with Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office that was asked to conduct the investigation after suspicious charges were noticed on the account and the Uintah County Attorney and local law enforcement decided the case should be handled by an outside agency.
The death of two men at a Halloween party in north Roosevelt is under investigation as a double homicide by the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office. “Deputies were called to a house near 1250 West 850 North at about 12:15 a.m. November 1st, 2019,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “When they arrived they found two men dead. The names of the men are not being released at this time. Individuals who were still at the house when deputies arrived are being interviewed. Detectives are working to locate an unknown number of people who left the house before deputies arrived.”

Christmas is around the corner and all the wonderful family traditions are showing up on the calendar. One such tradition is going into the forest and cutting down your own Christmas tree and permits will soon be going on sale. Ashley National Forest reminds people that no cutting is permitted within 200 feet of lakes and streams, roads, campgrounds, picnic areas, administrative sites, summer home areas, or in designated closed areas laid out on tree cutting maps.

Costumes should fit well and be flame resistant. Always test makeup. Remember to look both ways when crossing streets. Examine all treats before eating.
There were no injuries in an accident on SR-191 north of Vernal on Wednesday afternoon. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at Mile Marker 365 around 4:00 pm. A semi traveling southbound crossed into oncoming traffic on a curve and was struck by another semi, shares UHP. One of the semis was carrying steel and overturned, spilling its load. Both lanes were closed for clean up. After several hours one lane was opened up. UHP confirms that the driver wasn't speeding but was going too fast for the conditions.
Just one week after Roosevelt City Manager Ryan Snow announced his resignation, the Roosevelt City Assistant City Manager has followed suit. Assistant Manager and Finance Director John Zilles announced on Monday, October 28th, that he will resign from his position effective November 16th. Zilles shared the following in his resignation letter: “This is a decision that has come as a matter of prayer for quite some time. [It] comes after about 4 ½ years of a lot of hard work and dedication to help this city make immense improvements.
Uintah County issued a press release on Wednesday providing additional information on the topic of slumping mineral lease funds that support the county’s 6 Special Service Districts. “We are not panicked but we are preparing with a sense of urgency for the future of the districts,” shares Uintah County Commission Chairman Bill Stringer. “It is just prudent to study the alternatives and take action as soon as possible, instead of waiting for something to fall apart.” The six Special Service Districts in Uintah County are the Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District, the Fire Suppression Special Service District, the Impact Mitigation Special Service District, the Recreation Special Service District, the Transportation Special Service District and the Healthcare Special Service District. The county commission allocates mineral lease money to each of the Special Service Districts but retains no control over how those funds are spent, explains Uintah County.
The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a new scam in the area, this time taking advantage of election season. “Our office just received a complaint about a potential scam involving a caller who claimed to represent the Republican Party,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “The caller asked the complainant for the proper spelling of their full name, then asked a few political questions before requesting that the complainant make a donation by providing all of their credit card information over the phone.
Don’t let cold weather keep you from enjoying Halloween activities! The Halloween Mayor’s Walk held each year outside the Uintah Community Center is moving to Plan B with the arrival of cold, snowy weather. “The trick or treating will be held inside, upstairs, along the track,” shares Uintah Recreation District. “You will enter through the front and make your way upstairs. The carnival will still be held in the gymnasium. Please note that there won’t be enough room upstairs to accommodate strollers, but we will have stroller parking available when you enter the building.
It is that time of year when children (and even adults) put on costumes, go outside into the cold, and take part in the Halloween tradition of trick or treating. The Uintah Basin has several options for kids to get their candy on this Halloween. Uintah Basin Healthcare is inviting kids to the Villa at 265 North 300 West in Roosevelt from 2pm to 4pm. The Trick-or-Treat Halloween Parade will be returning to Main Street in Roosevelt City. Pre-school children will start trick or treating at 3pm.
