KNEU 1250Work is progressing on the 800 South project in Roosevelt City. According to Roosevelt City, construction is on schedule and the water and sewer lines are complete. The project stretches from 500 East to State Street on 800 South. The first phase of construction includes the installation of water and sewer lines as well as storm drainage.
It’s hard to see a good officer go and it’s apparently no different when it’s a K-9 officer. The Roosevelt City Police Department held a retirement party for K-9 officers Buddy and Zena on Tuesday, an occasion that was bittersweet. Buddy is 11 years old and has been with Roosevelt PD for 6 years.
The light configuration on Aggie Blvd and Main Street in Vernal remains a topic for local officials. Uintah County recently reached an agreement with Rocky Mountain Power to remove a significant number of poles along their portion of the street, shares Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion.

A growing list of sponsors are planning the Dollar Ridge Fire-Aid Fair that will include fund raising over 2 days in August.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has created a new local boater program that expedites the process of boating on Flaming Gorge. The program reduces the amount of time spent with with Aquatic Invasive Species specialists before launching your boat at the boat ramp on the Utah side of Flaming Gorge.
Duchesne County is among the latest counties in the state to report a positive test for West Nile Virus among its mosquito population. According to the Utah Department of Health, there are now 9 mosquito pools in the state that have tested positive and two of those are in the TriCounty Health District, one in Duchesne County and one in Uintah County.
Fires continue to keep crews busy. In the greater region, firefighters in Rio Blanco County are working on the Red Canyon Fire on County Road 27. It is 1190 acres and remains at 0% containment. Structures remain threatened with one residence evacuated. The Whiskey Fire is on Rangely County Road 109 and is being held at 39.5 acres and with no containment reported.
Local realtors are doing what they can to make sure every kid at school gets a full belly during lunchtime. Every year the Uintah Basin Chapter of Real Estate Agents holds a fundraiser to benefit the community. Last year, they gathered food and money for local food pantries. This year they are hosting a ‘Chuck Your Change for School Lunch’ drive.
A fire in a remote area of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation continues to grow. The Bear Trap Fire was first reported on July 21st located on a ridge just north of Bear Trap Knoll west of Big Springs on the reservation.
It’s been a busy few days for the marine rescue unit on Flaming Gorge with more incidents to handle since helping nine stranded Boy Scouts and their leaders to safety on Thursday night. On Sunday, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office lake patrol boat responded to a distress call coming from the Anvil Draw area of Flaming Gorge at about 4:00pm. According to the Sheriff’s Office, they discovered a Green River man who said he had been boating with four children and four adults.
A second public hearing has been scheduled as Vernal City officials consider vacating 400 West next to the LDS Temple. City officials initiated the discussion and possible action to vacate 400 West as a way to reduce street maintenance costs and to increase pedestrian safety.
Another successful first is likely right around the corner for Vernal Theatre: LIVE with the four day run of Annie Jr. opening Wednesday, August 1st. Auditions were held on July 9th and the response was so overwhelming, theater owner and show director Nashelle Jackson decided to do a double cast and add two additional showings in order to give as many local kids the experience as possible.
