KNEU 1250State representatives provided a report of the 2019 Utah legislative session during the Vernal Chamber luncheon on Tuesday. Among the bills discussed, Representative Scott Chew shared that having the homeless shelter funding bill lower the bed count was a particular success for rural Utah. A bill passed last year required counties to pay into a fund that benefitted only shelters that had at least 50 beds.
The most recent officer to join the Roosevelt Police Department is not new to the force. Lila, the K9 narcotics dog, got her start with Myton Police Department. Once Myton PD was disbanded she served with Naples PD, explains Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison.
The robotics team from Altamont High School will be competing in the National Robotics World Competition over April 28-30. The Nutty Robots team, composed of jr. high students Sydney Nielson, Sam Wilcox, and Walker Jessen, will be traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, with their coach Curtis Nielson.
Dinosaur National Monument has received a special designation as an International Dark Sky Park and the park is inviting all to come enjoy the experience for themselves. So far, the Monument has scheduled 35 opportunities for the remainder of this year for visitors to attend special presentations exploring Dinosaur’s dark skies. “Our ranger staff is developing a terrific program line-up,” says Monument Superintendent Paul Scolari.

The March numbers show a mixed bag for drilling in Uintah and Duchesne County. According to data provided by the State Division of Oil, Gas and Mining, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and compiled by the Uintah Basin Small Business Development Center, drilling continues to trend down.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services has released the latest unemployment numbers by county for the state of Utah. Daggett County unemployment remained the same from the month before at 4.8 percent, an increase from 4.2 percent one year prior. Duchesne County also remained the same, measuring at 4.1 percent unemployment, a slight decrease from the year before at 4.5 percent.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has announced that this year they will be stocking fewer fish in Utah waters but that the fish will be bigger. Stocking numbers have been consistent since 2014 but new research has convinced the DWR to focus on quality over quantity, producing higher quality fish with better survival rates.
