KNEU 1250The U.S. Surface Transportation Board has kicked off the NEPA process for the Uinta Basin Railway project that is sponsored by the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition. Entities and organizations that believe rail will ease the need for additional transportation infrastructure in northeastern Utah have been involved in and supportive of this proposed project, including the Ute Indian Tribe.
The Escalante Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) unveiled a new monument on Saturday to memorialize the location of the Jensen area’s first school. Jensen, originally known as Riverdale, was settled in 1877 and received its first school in 1881 when Miss Lydia Chatwin was hired as a school teacher for that area.
Uinta-Wasatch-Cache and Ashley National Forests announced this week that they are seeking public comment on a draft Environmental Impact Statement that analyzes sheep grazing allotments within the High Uintas Wilderness to determine if they should continue grazing or cease. The proposal is to authorize grazing on 5 allotments in each forest and to continue using the sheep driveway to allow domestic sheep on the 10 allotments when moving from their winter range.
A Roosevelt man died after an accidental fall yesterday in Vernal. According to Vernal PD, Law Enforcement and Medical Personnel were dispatched to Basin Saw and Cycle in Vernal City on June 20th just before 6:00pm on a call that an individual had fallen from a ladder. “Life Saving efforts were unsuccessful and 59 year old Bruce Taylor of Roosevelt was pronounced deceased at the scene.” Evans Family Media joins Vernal PD in offering our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Taylor at this difficult time.
A long standing community tradition, now sponsored by the Division of Wildlife Resources, is coming up next week. In its 31st year, the annual Josie Shoot is a .22 shooting competition for women of all ages inspired by local legend Josie Bassett Morris, a gun slinging, independent woman of the wild, wild west.
Graduates of USU Uintah Basin are finding success all over the world. Most recently, a 2013 graduate is the latest hire as a Professor at Utah Valley University. Rachel Arocho recently completed her doctorate and has now taken a position with UVU as an assistant professor of family science.
Thursday was a great kickoff of the John Wesley Powell River Fest set up around the Uintah County Library with music, food, inflatables, and even the chance to get on the water! People of all ages enjoyed getting on the makeshift pond next to the Scout Office, able to borrow kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes for a ride right in downtown Vernal!
It’s been an exciting week in downtown Roosevelt City with the ‘Fun on 40’ celebration. Part of the fun was welcoming people who may have traveled through Roosevelt many times but hadn’t stopped to enjoy the downtown atmosphere and businesses until now. Even more, the celebration was an opportunity for the great people and places in Roosevelt to shine, something that City Manager Ryan Snow says is natural as residents, business owners, and city officials alike are continually stepping up to beautify and invest in the City.
All this week we’ve highlighted the good going on in Roosevelt City and an upcoming event is a perfect example of the fun opportunities offered in the Roosevelt community. The annual Redmud & Color Run happens each year on the 4th of July at Roosevelt’s Constitution Park. The park is transformed into a big muddy, obstacle course. There are mud pits, swimming ponds, and hay bale towers for the filthiest fun you can have anywhere in the Basin this summer.
The Uintah County Commission adopted the tax rate for the 2019-2020 budget year during Monday’s Commission meeting. The state recommended a certified tax rate of 0.003083. “Instead of adopting the certified tax rate established by the state, the commissioners chose to retain the current tax rate, which is a lower rate of 0.002885,” shares Uintah County.
Playing softball never feels quite as good as when it is paired with a worthy cause. The Hit, Run, Score for a Cause tournament held each year in Vernal is the largest charity softball tournament in the state and it is in it’s 19th year. The registration deadline had passed but has been reopened and extended until Sunday, June 23rd, and teams are encouraged to sign up.
Locals that supported a special charity ride that made a stop in Vernal last month may be interested to learn that the cause raised a significant amount of money to benefit children with chronic illnesses. The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America announced on Tuesday that over $1.7 million dollars were raised during their 3,700 mile journey across America.
