KNEU 1250The Basin will have a very special visitor in the upcoming days. Royce O’Neale, the forward for the Utah Jazz, will be coming to give autographs and take pictures. Royce played college ball at the University of Denver from 2011 to 2013 and then from 2013 to 2015 he played at Baylor University.
Caution is urged around rivers throughout the Uintah Basin. National Weather Service has alerted the region that warm temperatures are accelerating the snow melt causing creeks and rivers to run high and flow fast and local agencies are making sure Basin residents are informed. “Much higher river flow leads to swift and unpredictable currents,” shares the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office. “Debris in the water could create numerous snags.
Baseball is a big part of life in the Uintah Basin for many local families. It makes the investments worth it when members of the Basin are able to take the local opportunities and make something better of it. Uintah High School alum Jayden Murray has done just that. He was a standout pitcher at Uintah High and graduated in 2015. He played four years of college baseball and spent the last two years at Dixie State.
Snakes and lizards may not be everyone’s cup of tea but enthusiasts in the Uintah Basin will be thrilled by a new rule approved Thursday by the Utah Wildlife Board going into effect January 1st, 2020. Previously, amphibian and reptile collectors or breeders had to have a Certificate of Registration and the highly sought-after native species in Utah were considered ‘controlled’ or ‘prohibited.’
Agencies and community members throughout the Basin took to social media over the weekend to remember a fallen local officer. On June 7th, 2010, Bureau of Indian Affairs Officer Joshua Yazzie was killed while responding to a call in Fort Duchesne. Tragically, his patrol vehicle rolled down an embankment when he was on his way to assist on the call.
This Saturday is Free Fishing Day. Everyone is invited to get out there and try their hands at fishing at any body of water in Utah. No one needs to have a fishing license as this event was designed to help introduce kids and beginners at a minimal cost to fishing.
For those traveling to and from the Wasatch Front, delays can continue to be expected through the Strawberry Valley construction zone. On Thursday, UDOT provided an update, stating that construction of the wildlife crossing underpass is underway. This is a major feature of the project as it aims to improve safety and reduce the collisions taking place on Highway 40 involving wildlife.
Though weather stopped the crews working on 800 South in Roosevelt for several days in May, the project has been fortunate to be developing rather well and paving the road is set in mid-June. The completed part of the project was funded by Utah Department of Transportation which includes the curb and gutter between State Street and 800 South, as well as the sidewalk along the south side of the street.
Officers from nearly every Uintah County law enforcement agency made time for fishing with some very special community members on Thursday morning. The Division of Wildlife Resources hosted the ‘Badges & Bobbers’ event at the recently opened Old Fort Ponds in the Maeser area during which local officers helped special needs adults and children try their hand at fishing and many of those that tried, experienced the thrill of catching a fish or two.
This spring, the last of the charges in 8th District Court filed against a Duchesne County man were dropped, but the man says it feels too late to put the pieces of his life back together. Charges were filed in May of 2018 against 49-year-old Darin Ace Thomas including two 1st Degree Felony charges of Criminal Conspiracy, two 3rd Degree Felony charges of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, one 3rd Degree Felony charge of Criminal Conspiracy, and one Misdemeanor charge of Sexual Solicitation.
Lt. Governor Spencer Cox and his wife Abby made stops all over the Uintah Basin this week as part of their mission to visit every city and town in the state of Utah while on the campaign trail for Governor. After stopping in cities and towns throughout Duchesne County, they met with citizens in Roosevelt on Wednesday for lunch at High Country Pizza.
Ashley National Forest offers even more than escapes into nature. There are attractions to visit to truly and thoroughly enjoy the experience and the area. The Red Canyon Visitor Center is located near many hiking trails and offers exhibits about the unique aspects of local flora, fauna, inhabitants, and geology. They also offer free programs throughout the summer.
