A unique museum in Duchesne County is rallying the community to see local history preserved into the future. The historic collection of Fred and Marie Pope, housed in what is called the “Pope House”, relies on the generosity of the community to keep afloat with an upcoming fundraiser that will provide treats, entertainment and even a blacksmith demonstration.

ASHLEY NATURE PARK A GROUP EFFORT

Countless hours of volunteers and Uintah County employees have come together in the completion of a new nature park. Located on 11 acres at 1744 West 1500 North, the Ashley Nature Park features natural, wooded dirt trails, an asphalt walking loop, a covered pavilion, vault toilet and a kiosk created by the Uintah County Regional History Center featuring a history of the property. The Uintah County dedication announcement emphasizes the help of volunteers in seeing the park become a reality.

Office of Outdoor Recreation Grant Program

A grant program that has been utilized locally is once again accepting applications. The Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation awards grants to nonprofits, youth programs and local or tribal government agencies for outdoor programs or projects that directly benefit the public. “Each year we see increased participation in outdoor activities within our local communities,” shares Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation Tom Adams.

Vernal City Approves Amendments to Airport Agreement

Vernal City Council approved amendments to the interlocal agreement between Uintah County, Vernal City and the Uintah Transportation Special Service District regarding operation of the Vernal Regional Airport. In presenting the amendments, Vernal City Manager Ken Bassett explained that the original agreement lacked specific language of how the Transportation District was to make payments, specifically to the airport project engineer GDA.

Altamont Cowboy to Compete in NHSFR

An Altamont cowboy is climbing the ranks in high school rodeo. BoDell Jessen, a senior at Altamont High School will be competing at the 68th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming later this month. BoDell qualified for the Utah team in bareback riding and calf roping.

Local boys baseball all stars teams are still riding the high of victory after succeeding at the championship tournament last week held in Beaver. Vernal’s 9 and under team battled their way to the 9U championship game after working their way up through the loser’s bracket having lost one game early on.

Tragic Shooting a Fake

A violent and tragic news story circulating on the internet Wednesday caught many locals by surprise. Thankfully, it turned out to be a fake. The news source, touting itself as “Breaking Daily News”, claimed that a domestic dispute in Vernal left a woman dead, her three children wounded and a boyfriend arrested. Those that clicked on it or around the site for more information were redirected to spam including adult themed websites. “This is one of the biggest problems on the internet,” shares Techris Design owner and technology expert Ted Munford.

Primary Election Day

Today is the last chance to cast a vote in the primary election. According to Uintah County Clerk Auditor Mike Wilkins, as ofMonday morning, 3,790 ballots had been cast in Uintah County by mail so far which is a great sign of voter turnout considering the 2014 primary totaled 4,319 votes. This is the first complete vote by mail election for Uintah County and Wilkins is hopeful the total voter turnout will exceed past primary elections.

Airport Agreement Amended

Vernal City Council approved an amendment to the engineering agreement with GDA on the airport runway project. Vernal Regional Airport Manager Kelly Harvey addressed the council duringWednesday’s meeting, explaining that the amendment has to do with a 404 permit required by the Environmental Protection Agency dealing with wetlands and environmental issues.

Uintah FBLA Heading to Nationals

Uintah High School’s Future Business Leaders of America(FBLA) Chapter enjoyed success at the state competition this month and qualified for nationals this summer. 23 Uintah students competed among 1,300 at the state competition and 3 students made the cut to move on.

Uintah DECA Students Headed to Nashville

A group of students from the Uintah High School DECA chapter will be attending the International Career and Development Conference in Nashville next week. 15 students from Uintah competed in the Utah DECA Competition last February in Layton.
