Still Time to Win Prizes in the Steinaker Ice Fishing Tournament

There is still time to win great prizes in the Steinaker Ice Fishing Tournament before it wraps up later this week, even if you don’t catch a tagged fish. “All registered participants who attend the give away on the 7th will be put in for a chance to win a prize!” shares Utah State Parks. “Tagged fish can be turned in at the DWR office on Vernal Avenue until 4:00 pm on February 7th! The prize giveaway will occur at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum on February 7th at 6 pm.

Ashley Regional Medical Center Starting Women’s Health Prenatal Classes

Having children can certainly be a life changing event! To help those that are pregnant, Ashley Regional Medical Center through their Women’s Center will be starting up a free five week class. This special service for expectant parents will help them get ready for the physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes that will come with having a baby. The classes are created to provide vital information and calming reassurances which can be especially helpful during pregnancy.

Dinosaur National Monument Presentation Made At Vernal Chamber Luncheon

Dinosaur National Monument Chief of Visitor Services Dan Johnson presented at the Vernal Chamber luncheon last week providing an update on the Monument’s happenings. Dinosaur National Monument covers 210,000 acres with a third of that in Utah and two-thirds in Colorado. The Monument received its International Dark Sky Certification in 2019 which has increased interest in the Park. In the last two years, the Monument has taken 15,000 students from around the globe on Virtual Field Trips, allowing students to see the Wall of Bones digitally.

USU Uintah Basin Professor Takes on Unique Study Topic

It is not often that a person can say they are doing something that has never been done before but a local Utah State University Uintah Basin associate biology professor can say just that. Charles Hanifin has spent twenty years, starting when he was a graduate student, developing an interest in “the coevolutionary relationship between toxic newts and the snakes that eat them.” While it was a topic of interest, USU’s lab did not have the resources and expertise to help Hanifin further his studies so he had to wait for a joint grant from the National Science Foundation and the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science.

Uintah Hope Squad Releases “You Are Enough” Video

School based peer to peer suicide prevention programs are making a difference in many communities. In fact, Hope Squads around the state and nation are doing their part to uplift and educate communities and one of our local groups has shared a video aimed at just that. The Uintah High School Hope Squad released a 2 minute video last week titled “You Are Enough”. Directed by Donovan Anderson and written by Kenadi Colton and Jackie Colton, the video says in part: “Even though many of us experience the feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression, we are here.

Last Day to Change Party Affiliation for Presidential Primary Election in March

The Presidential Primary will be held on March 3rd, 2020. Only registered Republicans will receive a Republican Ballot. Registered Democrats and Unaffiliated voters will receive a Democratic Ballot. All other voters registered with any other party will not receive a ballot for this election. Today is the last day to change your current party affiliation. All active registered voters will be mailed their official Ballot between February 11th and February 20th. Visit or contact your County Clerk’s Office for more information and if you need to change your party affiliation today.

Women’s Day Out This Weekend

A Basin tradition is here again and will not disappoint this weekend. Joe and Teddy Evans hatched the idea for Women’s Day Out 19 years ago hoping to provide something fun for locals during the down time of winter and during a month when not a lot is going on in the Uintah Basin. All these years later, the event continues to grow and don’t let the name fool you, all are invited including men, many who come each year as the best place to find the right Valentine’s present for their sweetheart.

Disney Theme For Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra Concert This Saturday

In a first for the organization, the youth members of the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra were allowed to choose the theme for their next concert and what do you think they chose? Disney of course! The kids have worked hard and are excited to present their Disney themed concert on February 1st, shares Executive Director Brad Vanfleet. He admits, however, it was tricky finding orchestra music that was a good fit for the group as Disney options were limited. Still, Vanfleet is happy for the experience and invites the public to come enjoy an evening of beautiful, fun music put on by these talented youth.

DWR Reminds Those That Gather Sheds to Take Ethics Course

Collecting antlers that fall to the ground, or sheds, is a very popular hobby in the Uintah Basin. Some families have even made it a family tradition which the Division of Wildlife Resources highly encourages. That being said, the DWR wants to remind all that if you want to look for sheds anytime between February 1st and April 15th you need to take the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Antler Gathering Ethics course. The reason is this is a very tough time of year for deer, elk, and moose and it’s important for people to minimize their impact on the animals.

Some of the reasons that Wyoming was listed include Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and our very own Flaming Gorge. Uintah Basin Healthcare scored a perfect 100 on their Energy Star certification for the Uintah Basin Medical Center. By earning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification, UBMC is continuing a legacy of energy efficiency and savings. The certification verifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of buildings across the nation. On average such certified buildings use 35 percent less energy, cause 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate.

Ashley Regional Sleep Specialist Reminds All of the Importance of Good Sleep

Ashley Regional Medical Center wants all to know the importance of good sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a third of U.S. adults get less than the recommended amount of sleep. According to Shelly Sorenesen, the sleep specialist with Ashley Regional Medical Center, “many people don’t connect the dots between the quality of their sleep and the quality of their overall health. Most adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to maintain good health.”
