Ashley Regional Medical Center wants all to know the importance of good sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a third of U.S. adults get less than the recommended amount of sleep. According to Shelly Sorenesen, the sleep specialist with Ashley Regional Medical Center, “many people don’t connect the dots between the quality of their sleep and the quality of their overall health. Most adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to maintain good health.” For better sleep stick to a regular sleep schedule, build a nightly bedtime ritual that is relaxing and away from bright light, exercise daily, sleep in a cooler air temperature and without distractions, have a comfortable and supportive mattress and pillow, and finally try to avoid alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine and heavy meals in the evening.
