KNEU 1250It was a full house at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce 69th Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Thursday night. The crowd enjoyed the interaction with and speech of Mitt Romney as the keynote speaker for the event.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah announced this week that they have filed a lawsuit on behalf of two former Daggett County Jail inmates that were subject to abuse while incarcerated. The Plaintiffs are listed as Dustin Porter and Steven Drollette who are seeking, quote, “damages and injunctive relief for a pattern of severe cruelty against them while they were incarcerated at the Daggett County Jail.”
The Special Olympics is celebrating 50 years as an organization and Uintah Basin athletes are celebrating by competing in the local games. Around 150 competitors from the Roosevelt, Myton, and Vernal area competed in the track and field events on Wednesday at Uintah High School.
A company that serves and saves lives in this community has plenty to celebrate. Gold Cross Ambulance was founded in 1968 by Gene and Julia Moffitt who responded to calls in the Salt Lake area with two Cadillac ambulances equipped with first-aid kits, resuscitation devices and stretchers.
Road construction has started up on Uintah Basin roads. The Duchesne County Road Department began work on the Wells Draw Road on Wednesday, May 16th.
Luke Stradinger visited the KVEL studio this week for an interview on the Meet the Candidate Forum. Stradinger is running for Duchesne County Sheriff. He has served as a state trooper for 19 years. Jack Lytle visited the KVEL studio this week for an interview on the Meet the Candidate Forum. Lytle is running for reelection as Daggett County Commissioner. Lytle was elected as Daggett County Commissioner in the 2014 election and goes into the 2018 election as an incumbent Commissioner. Multiple agencies responded to the “East Whiterocks” fire on Wednesday afternoon. According to the BIA Wildland Fire-Uintah & Ouray Agency, the wildland fire started northeast of Whiterocks and units from LaPoint-Tridell and Neola Fire Departments as well as Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service all responded to the fire.

A pair of California men stranded on a mountain during a rainstorm were rescued by Sweetwater County Search and Rescue on Friday. The men were on the south slope of Pine Mountain when they became stranded and had to hike to the Summit of Pine Mountain, the highest point in Sweetwater County, to get a cell phone signal to call for help.

The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public that a telephone scam is amping up again locally. The Sheriff’s Office received complaints that calls are being received with the caller making the threat of outstanding warrants.
