KNEU 1250Fall heading into winter in the Basin is not always the time we think about fish but Jones Hole National Fishery doesn’t want us to forget. The fishery recently announced that they received a new lot of Kokanee Salmon. The 380,000 eggs did not have an easy journey. They traveled from Wyoming and then had to be disinfected by soaking in a low concentration iodine bath before being let into the hatchery.
A man is in custody following a high speed chase in Duchesne County on Monday morning. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s deputies were called on an “attempt to locate” for a suicidal subject in his mid 20s around 8:00am. The white Chevy S-10 pickup the young man was driving was located about 4 miles north of the city of Duchesne and deputies tried to contact the individual but he drove away and deputies pursued him.
Saturday’s concert of the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra delivered a polished performance along with a few firsts. As an exciting first, the Uintah High School Orchestra opened the concert and the crowd enjoyed all three of their numbers, especially responding to their plucky performance of ‘Freckles’.
The drought that has been affecting the producers in the Uintah Basin has lead the Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to declare Daggett County as a primary natural disaster area. That means that farmers and ranchers that have losses due to the recent drought are possibly eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans.
This Veterans Day please take the time to give thanks to those serving and those that have served in protecting the freedoms of this country. Rep. There are approximately 18.2 million veterans living in the United States today.
The decade long pursuit of the “Million Pipeline” continues to meet opposition. A proposal that was shut down to pipe water from the Green River to Colorado’s Front Range surfaced again last spring, proposing water be piped near Brown’s Park in Daggett County. Aaron Million is the Colorado business owner requesting that water in the Green River be piped to Colorado.
Becky Williams, a Utah State University- Uintah Basin professor, and Rich Etchberger, USU vice provost of regional campuses and former USU-Uintah Basin wildlife science professor, have been recognized for all their efforts in successfully running the Uintah Youth Conservation Corps by the USDA Forest Service.
Last year feedback from an expert on tourism and economic development evaluated the Vernal area. He made many recommendations, one of which was a wayfinding system. In response, 8 local entities including Uintah County, Naples City, Ballard City, Vernal City, Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce, Uintah Recreation District, Uintah County Tourism and the Uintah Transportation Special Service District have joined together to address the issue.
Showing the Uintah Basin that there is no age limit to service, students at Davis Elementary recently finished a fun and worthwhile service project. What made this project even more special was that it was sponsored and planned by Angela Hawkins’ third grade class. Each month, a few students who are performing well in class organize an activity that will benefit the school or the community.
The Community Impact Board met Thursday with the a request to fund the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Uintah Basin Rail Project. A motion to approve the full amount of approximately $28 million dollars failed when it faced a split vote and the chairman broke the tie and voted against the motion. The state treasurer David Damschen and a representative from the state attorney general’s office were vocal in the discussion, opposing the project.
Santa’s Community Effort has a long and successful history in Uintah County with the Rotary Club now keeping the cause organized and running. Even with economic downturn, locals each year take tags from the trees around town and follow through by donating gifts for the children assigned. The hope is that the generosity will continue this year to help brighten the holidays for local families in need.
It was a record voter turnout for the 2018 General Election. Uintah County Clerk-Auditor Mike Wilkins reports a 71.4 percent voter turnout which is at least 30 percent higher than the average for a non-presidential election year. Wilkins also reported that 200 ballots were received in the mail on Wednesday and, in addition to the 269 ballots that need signatures verified, there are also 275 provisional ballots.
