KNEU 1250The USU Bingham Research Center issued a local winter ozone alert on Monday, recommending that actions be taken to reduce ozone-forming emissions. The announcement states that there is a reasonable likelihood that ozone in the Uintah Basin will exceed the EPA standard within the next several days and that conditions associated with ozone exceedances will remain until at least this weekend.
Every year in January, the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy (UFRA) conducts a fire training school in St. George, Utah called Winter Fire School (WFS). The event is one of the largest of its type in the nation with more then 70 classes and over 700 students, instructors, and support staff. It also boasts a large vendor show with 60 some vendors representing major fire, rescue, safety, and EMS equipment sales and service companies from throughout the United States.
Freezing temperatures made it difficult to manage a fire called in Monday evening in Naples. According to the Naples Police Department, Naples Fire Department and Vernal Fire Department were dispatched to ‘Save On Auto’ at 1400 East 2000 Southat 9:10pm on Monday. When crews arrived, the main building of the business was fully engulfed.
The Utah Wildlife Board is looking for new board members. “We need at least one person from northeastern Utah,” says Staci Coons, board coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. “The other spots can be filled by anyone in the state.” Only two members from a region can serve at the same time on the board.
The Executive Director position for the Uintah Transportation Special Service District (UTSSD) has been filled. Cheryl Meier officially accepted the position on January 16th. Meier has served for four years as the Uintah County Public Lands Specialist. “I have been doing double time right now between my position as the public lands specialist but will be transitioned as the Director [of the Transportation District] this week,” shares Meier.
It was another successful year for the Burbot Bash at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. 212 teams made up of 695 participants competed. $39,000 dollars in prizes were given away, resulting in about 150 prizes. Bo Egbert had the biggest catch of the day at 34.4 inches. The smallest catch of the day was Payden Bruckner at 8.6 inches. The Wild Turkeys were the top team and by a long shot with 289 burbot.
The stretch of highway that runs south between Rock Springs to Flaming Gorge and the Utah State Line has been closed since Tuesday. The heavy snowfall has created impassable roads all throughout Wyoming. The Wyoming Department of Transportation has been working hard to clear the roads and now that Interstate 80 has been cleared, the crews have shifted their attention.
UBTech graduate Chandler Vincent has accomplished so much in his 20 year of life and a recent article in ‘The Welder’ magazine shares his story. About five years ago he was dropping out of high school and his future was unsure. It was at this time his mother urged him to try skills classes and that’s when he found welding. It was his mother and his welding teachers that changed his life, shares the magazine article.
Talented young musicians from across eastern Utah were in Vernal over the weekend putting in hard work to make great music together. The 1st Annual Eastern Utah Honors Ensembles Festival welcomed select band and orchestra members from Altamont, Union, Grand County, and Uintah High Schools as well as Uintah and Vernal Middle Schools.
The Utah Symphony thrilled the community in a free concert on Wednesday night and didn’t stop there. Every school in Uintah School District as well as students from White House Academy, Uintah Basin Christian Academy, and Flaming Gorge Elementary were represented during an educational concert held Thursday morning at the Vernal Middle School auditorium. The concert stop was part of the Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools or POPS program funded by the Utah Legislature and administered by the State Board of Education. Before each number, the conductor took the time to teach musical principles and give pointers of what to listen for in that particular song. Uintah School District Arts Coordinator Lynna Kendall was thrilled by the support from the community and response of the students, who gave the Utah Symphony a standing ovation after the final number. Kendall estimated that just over a thousand students were able to attend the rare opportunity to listen to the Utah Symphony in person.
The government shutdown continues despite votes taken in Washington that could have brought it to an end. Senator Mitt Romney made a public statement following the failed votes saying he voted in favor of President Trump’s proposed compromise that would end the shutdown and secure the border.
Although the Utah Wildlife Board approved changes to the black bear hunts, the only real difference is an increase to the number of hunts. Having no changes is a good thing for biologists. They will be able to better determine how the rules truly affect the bear populations. “The number of bears doesn’t fluctuate much from year to year,” Darren DeBloois, game mammals coordinator for the DWR, explains, “so it makes sense to keep the rules consistent and not change them every year.
