KNEU 1250The prescribed burn in Duchesne Ranger District continues on Fossil Ridge in the “Reservation Ridge East Sagebrush project” area. Ashley National Forest shared on Friday that fire crews began the project on October 12th and have burned 1100 of the 1400 acres so far.
Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officers are seeking information on two poaching incidents that took place last month in the Vernal area. According to the DWR, the first incident was a small mule deer fawn that was shot and left on the side of the road near Dry Fork. The second incident was a pronghorn buck that was shot in the neck near Fiddler Road.
One of the new members of the Craig City Council is facing felony charges after being arrested during an undercover predator sting operation in Jefferson County, Colorado. According to the Arrest Affidavit, 48-year-old Brian Paul Mackenzie was arrested on October 11th for the crimes of Internet Luring of a Child, Internet Sexual Exploitation of a Child, and Criminal Attempt Sexual Assault on a Child. The day before, an undercover officer posted a picture on a social media site posing as an underage female named “Kylie”.
The Vernal City Police Department is asking for help from area residents in identifying the owner of late model GMC/Chevrolet. There was a Vandalism detail that happened at the Uintah County Museum at about 4:08am on October 5th.
Vernal City has announced that the city is auctioning their surplus property. Just a few of the items being placed up for auction include a 12 Volt water pump, a band saw, cement vibrator, and couple swap cooler.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is asking for the public’s cooperation with hunters playing an important role in the surveillance of Chronic Wasting Disease. During the first few days of the rifle hunt, DWR officers will be collecting samples at check stations across the state, including several in northeastern Utah. Successful hunters are encouraged to stop at a check station where staff will take lymph nodes from the deer and ask a few questions including where the deer was harvested.
The PRCA announced this week that a Uintah Basin man is the winner of a prestigious annual award in professional rodeo. Josh Frost of Randlett captured his first Linderman Award this year for competing in the tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding events, shares PRCA ProRodeo. The Linderman Award is given to a cowboy that has won at least $1,000 dollars in three events, one of which must be a roughstock event and one a timed event.
While his plate is perhaps less full in comparison, retirement for former Senator Kevin VanTassell has shown a continued commitment to the citizens of the Uintah Basin. VanTassell served as the Utah District 26 Senator for 12 years through 2018 and enjoyed a successful career with Zion’s Bank. Now in retirement he chooses to still serve on boards that have an impact on rural Utah: the Utah Building Board, Utah Communications Board, and Utah Highway Commission on which he is a voting member.
While schools operated as normally as possible, Union High School and other Roosevelt schools had an increased police presence on Wednesday as Roosevelt Police led an investigation into a threat of a possible gun being brought to school. Roosevelt Police reported midday Wednesday that the threat had come through Snapchat.
Thankfully there were no serious injuries reported in a rollover crash that took place Tuesday in Vernal. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident took place around 9pm on 500 North (SR-121) and 1500 West. The driver of a 2012 Honda was traveling westbound when the vehicle ran off the road to the right. The accident caused the vehicle to roll leaving the vehicle on its side in the middle of the roadway. Utah Highway Patrol shares that no serious injuries were reported.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is urging waterfowl hunters to watch for Harmful Algal Blooms while out hunting, including some identified in northeastern Utah. While some believe Harmful Algal Blooms only occur during hot summer weather, it is possible for them to continue to be a threat to humans and pets throughout the fall and winter.
