A Vernal teen’s trip to the state Capitol last week turned into an extra special experience after her unique design for a new Utah flag was selected as a stand out. Angelina Nading was attending her first Local Officials Day as a member of the Vernal Youth City Council when the 400 youth in attendance participated in an activity as part of the ‘More Than A Flag’ statewide initiative. Each youth was challenged to draw their idea for a new flag as well as explain the symbolism of their design. Angelina’s design was recognized as one of the top 10 out of the 400 youth designs. “My design incorporated simple, meaningful symbols of Utah that made the flag less complicated,” explains Angelina. The flag design is mostly blue with a yellow border and a yellow circle in the middle. Inside the yellow circle is a beehive surrounded by 45 stars because Utah was the 45th state admitted into the U.S. “Our state represents industry and hard work which is what the beehive represents,” shares Angelina. “When I realized there was only a select few chosen, it was special knowing that my design would be seen by our actual Governor. It put butterflies in my stomach. It was great.” The ‘More Than A Flag’ initiative is supported by the Governor’s Office and the Utah Legislature. To learn more, visit flag.utah.gov
