A Vernal teen now holds a state record after an amazing swim at the Utah Summer Games in Cedar City over the weekend. Basin Blast Swimming is a club sanctioned by USA Swimming that consists of swimmers from Vernal, Roosevelt and Price. Swimmers Jaten and Presten Barraclough, Efren Melendez, Keni Porter, Alexander Spainhower and Jarom Thomas were able to represent the team at the games. Basin Blast Swimming brought home 18 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals and Alexander Spainhower broke the state record in the 13/14 age group 50 m Freestyle, a record that has been standing since 1995. “Alexander swam a 24.88 in that race,” shares Coach Mindy Brooksby. “Sprints are hard. You have to do everything perfectly to cut time when you’re at that level. The kid is a natural talent and I’m sure we’ll see some more records taken by him.” Congratulations Alexander and well done to all the Basin Blast Swimmers!
