Utah saw over a dozen new wildfires start over the weekend and one of those is located south of Duchesne. Utah Fire Info first reported the Sterling Fire on Sunday evening, sharing that it was lightning caused and had burned 7 to 10 acres on the Ashley National Forest about 22 miles south of Duchesne in Indian Canyon. On Monday, Ashley National Forest reported that the Sterling Fire had spread to approximately 20 acres and that it is located within the Right Fork of Indian Canyon in steep slopes and inaccessible terrain. “On Sunday, fire crews provided an aggressive initial attack, utilizing aerial resources including helicopters and air tankers as well as ground crews,” shared Forest officials. “Additional resources have arrived and are assisting in suppression efforts. This includes two hotshot crews, one type one wildland fire module, and three engines. Aerial resources continue to be used today. The fire is not currently threatening any structures. U.S. Highway 191 remains open.”
