Utah State Parks and Recreation Remind Public About Ice Safety

As the weather starts to chill a whole slew of new outdoor activities become a possibility. Many activities include being around or on ice. Utah State Parks and Recreation reminds the public that while playing on the ice is fun it is never 100% safe. Falling through the ice into cold water and freezing temperatures is an extremely dangerous situation. Before doing any sort of ice related activity be aware of the ice conditions, realizing that conditions can vary drastically within a few feet and throughout the day. Be sure to continually check the thickness of the ice. Inform a friend or a family member to the locations you will be at and when they should expect to hear from you. A couple of safety tips include fish with a partner, drill test holes as you go on the ice, and avoid having large groups and equipment in a small area. Avoid the mouths of streams and underwater springs that can create dangerous ice conditions. Clear ice is capable of holding more weight then cloudy ice and never venture out onto partially ice-covered water. Carry safety equipment such as an ice pick, rope, and a rescue throw bag. Seriously consider wearing a life vest under or over clothing as life jackets save lives. If a rescue is needed use a rope or pole, do not go into the water. Many would-be rescuers become victims as well when getting too close. Have fun while being safe on the ice this winter.
