5th grade students in Roosevelt City have received a hands-on learning experience about the operations of city government thanks to Roosevelt City Mayor Olsen and Councilman Busenbark. The pair recently visited all the 5th grade students at Kings Peak Elementary School, Centennial Elementary, and East Elementary School, teaching them about elections and what city council and mayors do. “They both later invited students at each school to campaign and run for either mayor or city council,” shares the Roosevelt City announcement. “This involved them preparing and giving a speech, then letting students vote for their officials. Councilmembers campaigned in their classes and mayors campaigned to their grades. Mayor Olsen had the elected student officials practice making pretend policy changes like extending recess time from 10 to 15 minutes.” Several of the elected student councilmembers and mayors attended this week’s Roosevelt City Council meeting to add to the educational experience.
