KNEU 1250Do you have the means and desire to help with the cleanup from the Dollar Ridge Fire? Duchesne County’s Community Development Department is assembling a list of providers who have equipment and manpower to assist with the clean up of the properties damaged by the Dollar Ridge Fire.
Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to offer any information they may have about a ‘Man with a Gun’ who scared a group of young men on the 4th of July. Deputies were dispatched to the BLM horse corrals in the Rock Springs area after 10pm on the night of July 4th after a man with a gun reportedly pointed his firearm at a group of young men and told them to get on the ground.
A 6-year-old went briefly missing last week in Duchesne County but thankfully was spotted by the crew of a medical helicopter assisting on the search. According to Sgt. Carl Reilley, deputies were dispatched on July 6th on a call of a missing person near the end of Five Mile Road and Gate Canyon Ridge.The caller said he’d been searching for his grandson for 30 minutes but could not find him. Classic Air Medical was put on standby and Sgt. Reilley began working with Deputy Jeff Williams to try and find who it was that had called dispatch in order to get a starting point.
It’s more positive news as firefighters are making progress on the Dollar Ridge Fire. As of last report on Monday night, the fire reached 45 percent containment and the size was estimated at 52,068 acres. The continued effort being made to contain the fire has been monumental with total personnel on the fire at 863 on Wednesday night. Stories continue to spread of the generosity of the community towards the evacuees as well as special stories involving the firefighters themselves.
Vernal City officials are interested in hearing from its citizens as possible action is being considered to vacate 400 West next to the LDS Temple. According to their press release, city officials initiated the discussion and possible action to vacate 400 West as a way to reduce street maintenance costs and to increase pedestrian safety.
The annual Flaming Gorge Osprey Watch is a favorite among locals and known as a chance to see more than just osprey. Other birds of prey, including golden eagles, turkey vultures and American kestrels are frequently spotted at the annual event, shares DWR outreach manager Tonya Kieffer.
A high crime neighborhood has caught the attention of the Uintah County Commission after a concerned resident came to them during last week’s Commission meeting with a specific request for more street lights. The neighborhood located on 4000 South and Vernal Avenue has, in the words of a concerned citizen, “a lot of drug traffic” over the last ten years.
It’s the end of an era as demolition is underway on the old Union High School in Roosevelt. While most of the building is coming down, a portion will actually remain in tact and will be utilized as the new district offices. “Most of the work on the new school is done, and a lot of the classroom equipment and supplies have been moved in,” shares the Roosevelt Bulletin.
The ‘Our Schools Now’ initiative has had one focus since its formation last year, to work with Utah Legislature to increase education funding. Uintah High School English teacher and current Utah Teacher of the Year Aaryn Birchell is the face of the latest video from the group explaining how a gas tax increase could be the answer to education funding woes.
Authorities say a Mississippi man, suspected of murdering his wife, was last seen in the Vernal area. 61-year-old Charles Eugene Bowman is being sought by the US Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Bowman’s wife was last seen alive on May 17th but her remains were found on the couple’s Mississippi property, reports KSL.
The weekend began to see successful containment operations of the Dollar Ridge Fire as Mother Nature gave a hand to the hard working firefighters. Utah Fire Info reports that as of Sunday, July 8th, the fire had reached 49,789 acres, was 30 percent contained, and had 784 fire personnel on the job.
Utah is not alone as fires threaten land and homes of many residents. Neighboring Colorado is also dealing with multiple wildfires. The Divide Fire, located 23 miles north of Craig, was mapped on Sunday at 19,947 acres. Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reports that hot, windy weather pushed the fire to over 13,000 acres on Friday and reached 40 percent containment on Saturday.
