KNEU 1250A popular trail in Daggett County on the Green River has been closed while maintenance takes place. The Little Hole Trail below Flaming Gorge Dam is having sections of the boardwalk replaced for public safety and the work will be done in three different time frames.
Mirror Lake Highway has been reopened though is still affected by the Mirror Lake Complex Fire. The Mirror Lake Complex Fire, burning towards the High Uintas, is actually two fires: the Murdock Fire and the Slate Fire.
Social media has proven to be a worthwhile tool in assisting law enforcement on investigations. This time it’s the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office using Facebook to seek public information on stolen goods. On Monday, the Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies are investigating a case of theft out of Myton. Mounted antlers are pictured with the post. Anyone who may have information pertaining to the case are asked to call the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office at 435-738-2015 or the tip line at 435-738-0196.
It’s official. Pelican Lake has been scheduled for rotenone treatment by the Division of Wildlife Resources. The treatment is aimed at removing common carp in order to improve water clarity and start the process of restoring the Pelican Lake fishery. Located about 25 miles southeast of Roosevelt, Pelican Lake has been known as the place to go to catch big bluegill in Utah as well as largemouth bass.
Pony rides and carnival games made the day for kids of all ages on Saturday at the Uintah FFA fundraiser hosted by the Vernal IFA. The event raised funds for the FFA members competing at nationals in Indianapolis at the end of October.
An algae bloom has been sighted in Flaming Gorge in the Lost Dog and Fire Hold areas of the reservoir. The Wyoming Department of Health and Department of Environmental Quality issued an advisory and Ashley National Forest is posting warning signs at the entrance locations warning of the dangerous algae bloom. Sweetwater County Health Officer Dr. Stachon reports that highly visible algae blooms are not unusual in still waters this time of year, especially when water temperatures have been high.
A group of environmentalist organizations has filed a lawsuit targeting a BLM decision to issue oil and gas leases on land near Dinosaur National Monument. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado and the Plaintiffs are listed as Rocky Mountain Wild, National Parks Conservation Association, Center for Biological Diversity, and Wildearth Guardians.
The Murdock Fire, located in Summit County in the High Uintas Wilderness, is impacting Duchesne County. The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office announced on Sunday that the Mirror Lake Highway was closed from Murdock Basin Turnoff to Ruth Lake Campground due to the Murdock Fire.
Heavy rainfall is expected this week in the Uintah Basin and beyond thanks to Tropical Storm Rosa in the east Pacific and National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings for most of Utah. The time period for the heaviest rainfall is expected to be Monday afternoon and evening for southern Utah and Tuesday through early Wednesday for Central and Northern Utah.
One local man is getting some much deserved attention. Jacque Yost has been a long-time substitute teacher at the high school and continually plays a role in most events that happen at Uintah High School. He volunteers to help at the musicals, athletic events, and anything else the school asks of him.
Three seats on the Uintah School District’s Board of Education are up for election in November and will appear on the ballots within applicable precincts. In District #1, voters in the Davis, Jensen, and Naples precincts will choose between Harlan “Scoot” Wilkins and Lori Gillman. In District #2, voters in the Ashley and several Vernal precincts will choose between Dave W. Chivers and incumbent candidate Kevin Dickson.
It’s National Family Meal Month and local health educators are encouraging Basin residents to make family meal time a priority. Ashley Stegeman, USU Extension educator over the Food Sense program, has a list of reasons why Basin families should invest in family meal time and how to make it easier.
