It was a night of much deserved recognition at the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office annual awards banquet held on Wednesday night at the Centennial Events Center. Lt. John Crowley gave the keynote address and Sheriff Travis Tucker handed out the awards to deputies, staff, volunteers, and community partners. Corrections Sgt. Bryant Cook earned the Correctional Officer of the Year Award.
Opponents are urging lawmakers to shut down a new tax bill in Utah that will add a state sales tax to services. The House Revenue and Taxation Committee voted 12 to 2 on Friday to move HB441 ‘Tax Equalization and Reduction Act’ forward. HB441 enacts a sweeping tax on services that will apply to both small and large businesses and everything in between, with few exceptions.

A local high school is making a run for a state championship in their very first year of play. The Terra Academy Boys Basketball team finished their season with 11 wins and just one loss, ranking them first in their division and sending them on a quest for the 2019 USSA state basketball championship for smaller schools in the state of Utah. The Terra Tigers hosted the East Hollywood High Manbears out of West Valley on Wednesday.

The Utah Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation- Uintah Basin Chapter is holding their Big Game Banquet this weekend. For those that aren’t familiar, the foundation works to “ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat and our Hunting Heritage. In support of our mission,” shares the Foundation, “the RMEF is committed to: conserving, restoring and enhancing natural habitats; promoting the sound management of wild elk, which may be hunted or otherwise enjoyed; restoring elk to their native ranges, and educating members and the public about habitat conservation and our hunting heritage.”
The National Park Service has announced a new superintendent for Dinosaur National Monument. Starting March 31st, Paul Scolari will serve as the Superintendent of the Monument in Colorado and Utah and will also supervise the Superintendent of Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming. Scolari has worked for the National Park Service for over 24 years and is currently the Chief of Resource Management and Planning over a group of national parks in California.

The jail was listed for sale last year, gathering attention in media throughout the country. “The jail is still For Sale and we are aggressively working with a realtor to find a buyer,” shares the Daggett County Commission. “We’ve had it covered in many publications including the LA Times and we have fielded several good inquiries.”
The Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus are performing tomorrow in concert, ‘The Melody Lingers On’ featuring the music of Mozart to Berlin. The concert is certain to be an emotional one for many of the performers past and present as it will be the last concert that Dr. James Bankhead and his wife Lyn will participate in while serving as the organization’s Artistic Director and Master Conductor for the choir.
While Bluffdale, Utah is not in the Uintah Basin, any city in Utah that is having 139 earthquakes over a 12 day period might cause concern. And so it did! The state has been answering many questions concerning earthquakes in an effort to ease and prepare minds.
The Dinosaur Town Council is scheduled to be in Steamboat Springs today testifying before a grand jury about the ongoing investigation into the town’s inner dealings. Clay Thorp of the Craig Daily Press reports that Trustee David Heinrich “confirmed he and at least eight others were served a second round of subpoenas by 14th Judicial District attorneys” and that they were to appear before the grand jury on Thursday.
