Are you interested in finding out more on how to help your students and children thrive in a world filled with social media and fast-paced learning? Dr. Christy Kane will be coming to Roosevelt Junior High School on January 23rd to speak on the effects of stress on the minds of students. Her presentation will be in the auditorium and will start at 6:00 p.m. She will be discussing topics such as social media’s influence on self-esteem, how to increase positive mental health, and why teenagers think differently than children and adults. Duchesne County School District invites all parents and students in the surrounding areas to attend.
A fire at BHI on 826 South 1500 East in Naples caused approximately $200,000 dollars in damages on Saturday. According to a press release from the Uintah Fire District, the Naples City Fire Department received a report of smoke at the BHI building at around 5:00pm. “Firefighters arrived within minutes to find the end bay on fire with a semi truck inside,” explains the press release. “Crews extinguished the fire and had it contained within 15 minutes. Smoke had spread throughout the bays and [there was] minor smoke damage in the second floor office building.
Uintah School District has issued a statement on an alleged hazing incident involving members of the boys basketball team. The statement includes the following: “The administration conducted a thorough investigation and found that some individuals engaged in inappropriate conduct, but it did not constitute hazing and there was no malicious intent. Those who engaged in inappropriate conduct have been disciplined accordingly and the matter has been resolved at the school level."
In a move that will greatly affect northwestern Colorado’s people and economy, Tri-State Generation and Transmission announced Thursday the retirement of their 3 remaining coal generation facilities. According to the press release, Craig Station and Colowyo Mine in northwestern Colorado will be closed by the year 2030 and their New Mexico coal-fired power plant by the end of 2020. This will impact approximately 600 power plant and mine employees. The decision to close all coal facilities is part of their ‘Responsible Energy Plan’ which they announced was in development last July and which is expected to be shared with the public next week.
To be the first of its kind in rural Utah, the Innovation and Co-Working Center will be located in the old Vernal Police Department building. The Uin-Tech Committee was formed in 2018 with the goal of providing a space for entrepreneurs and start up businesses to have the technology they need to develop and grow. Co-working spaces have been popping up around the more populated areas of the state serving independent professionals, entrepreneurs and small companies all in the same office space.
Uintah High Athletic Director Bill Sivert announced the new Ute head football coach on Thursday. Justin DeCol will replace Mike Petersen, who retired after the 2019 season. DeCol graduated from Uintah High School in 1991 and has spent more than two decades coaching at the prep and junior college levels. He considers the chance to coach at his alma mater as a great opportunity. “I am humbled to be a football coach and a teacher," shares DeCol.
Uintah Basin Association of Government representative Lauren Schwanz announced during Tuesday’s Chamber luncheon that they are always in need of volunteers from the community to help with their programs. Volunteers are currently needed to learn more about tax law and help people with tax preparations. Last year, they were able to help 400 people and they would like to increase that number this year. Other programs in need of volunteers include the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
The Sterling Scholar program is meant to give recognition to students who show academic prowess. These outstanding students are judged not only on their GPA and class schedule, but also on their expertise in one of thirteen categories, their leadership experience, and their record of community service. Altamont’s Sterling Scholars for this year are Shalyce Gardner in Science, Ayla Myrin in Social Science, Hanna Myrin in Vocal Performance, Gracey Gardner in Agricultural Science, Kinly Panas in Dance, Shauri Thacker in English, Layla Jenson in Family and Consumer Sciences, and DeLanee Theener in Business and Marketing. Congratulations to these students.
Furever Buddy’s Dog Rescue is doing amazing things for animals in need but are at risk of losing their location. The organization has been in their new facility for about 6 months and have been able to save hundreds more cats and dogs than they would have otherwise. Unfortunately for the organization, the building they have been leasing has several interested buyers and Furever Buddy’s director Melisa Stevenson is hoping they can find a way to purchase the building and stay there.
A Moon Lake Electric power outage affected businesses and neighborhoods on Wednesday. Downtown Roosevelt was without power for about 4 hours from 8am to noon. As a result of that outage, Strata Networks had services affected throughout the Uintah Basin including businesses throughout Duchesne and Uintah Counties that rely on Strata internet for running cards and other operations. At 12:15pm, Strata announced that services appeared to have been restored to their affected customers but unfortunately some customers continued experiencing issues.
