It's impossible to completely protect your kids from germs during the cold and flu season but there are things you can do that will help. Representing TriCounty Health on the topic, local school nurse Ashley Harrison says that the best way to make sure your child’s immune system is running at its best is to make sure they are getting plenty of sleep, good exercise, and nutritious food. Harrison acknowledges that it can be difficult to get kids to bed but that it is worth the effort because it is not only important for their physical health but their cognitive and emotional health as well.
Running your own company can be very fulfilling but it also has its own set of challenges. America’s Small Business Development Center Utah wants to help the entrepreneurs of the Uintah Basin. The organization will offer what is called Biz SMART In Depth Entrepreneur Training. This eight week course will cover such topics as planning and research, organizational matters, financial overview, financing your business and generational change. There will be a class in Vernal and one in Roosevelt.
Although there has been a shake up to the Boy Scouts of America organization, it has not changed the local tradition of the Klondike Derby. This winter camping event, with an annual sled race, has long been a part of the scouting experience and even though things are different this adventure does not need to be. This year the scouts have invited other youth organizations to take part. “Winter Camp has always been a favorite and the High Uintah District of Scouts BSA has a bunch of new Troops and Packs formed,” shares BSA High Uintah District Executive Joni Crane.
Utahns are most likely to see a Bald Eagle during the month of February. These iconic birds fly to Utah to escape the colder conditions farther North. The DWR will be hosting several viewing events including one at Ouray National Wildlife Refuge. There will be spotting scopes and binoculars available although individuals are encouraged to bring their own. As a wonderful bonus to the event participants will get a free collectible Bald Eagle Month pin. The viewing will be held Saturday, February 8th, from 8am until noon. Be sure to dress warm and wear waterproof boots. The event is free but participants are asked to register in advance on Eventbrite.
USU Uintah Basin is doing something special to support, celebrate, and honor the women of the Uintah Basin with their Year of the Woman campaign. Each month will highlight women in categories ranging from Women’s Suffrage to Wellness & Nutrition. The category for January is Arts & Culture and the first woman to be highlighted is Jen Curtis of Vernal. Utah State University Uintah Basin shared a video highlighting Jen on their Facebook page on Monday evening.
The Burbot Bash is coming up to once again fight back against burbot, an invasive species having a devastating effect on the Flaming Gorge fishery. “We are excited about using the Burbot Bash as a forum to increase public awareness of this threat to the Flaming Gorge fishery,” shares Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce president Mark Wilson. “It is a great way to introduce anglers to the family-friendly sport of ice fishing that is so popular in Flaming Gorge.”
If you’re among the crowd that still has a real Christmas tree up or maybe it has been moved to the side of the house, don’t worry. There is still time to drop it off for recycling. The Vernal Chamber Conservation Issues Committee offers Christmas tree recycling each year. After removing all decorations, drop the tree off in the parking lot at 100 North 100 West in Vernal. Collected trees are usually chipped into mulch for landscaping and some are used whole for erosion control or wildlife habitat improvement.
Utah State University Uintah Basin recently announced that USU has a new tool available to help with mental health. Students of USU have free access to ACT Guide, a free online mental health and wellness resource. The self-help program was designed by Michael Levin, an associate professor in the USU Psychology Department, along with members of the USU ACT Research Group to help with mild to moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and/or stress.
Will Vernal be adding a new nickname to its list? It will if Uintah County Travel and Tourism has anything to do with it. “We want to be the Cornhole Capital of Utah,” shares Travel and Tourism Director Lesha Coltharp. “Everybody chuckles and raises an eyebrow but they’re playing cornhole all the time in their backyards, at family reunions and in campgrounds.” For those that aren’t familiar, Cornhole is a game in which players throw bags of corn kernels at raised platforms set up opposite each other, one for each team.
Strawberry Reservoir is known for some good fishing and officials are asking for some volunteer hours in return. In fact, it is Utah’s most popular fishery receiving over 1.5 million angling hours annually. From the reservoirs humbling beginnings in 1913, Strawberry Reservoir held 283,000 acre-feet of water and has grown to its current maximum capacity of over 1.1 million acre-feet. There are four major fishing areas: Strawberry Basin, the Meadows, Soldier Creek Basin and the Narrows.
Over 700 high school wrestlers from 31 schools competed in the Tournament of Champions at Vernal’s Western Park over the weekend and local wrestlers proved their dominance as Uintah High School won the team title with 233.5 points. The team from Juab took second place with 229 points and Pleasant Grove took third place with 214 points. Other local teams competed well with Duchesne at tenth place with 112 points and Union High School at thirteenth with 75 points. Uintah’s Cole Huber took 2nd place in the 120 weight category.
