TriCounty Health Addresses Concern Over Coronavirus

Coronavirus is the topic of TriCounty Health’s Give’m Health highlight this week. “As of February 3rd, 2020, 11 cases of Novel Coronavirus have been confirmed in the United States,” shares TriCounty Health. “No confirmed cases have been reported in Utah. While the reported cases in the U.S are worrisome, the risk to the general public and to Utahns is low. Investigations are ongoing and The Utah Department of Health and Tricounty Health Department will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.”

Congressman Bishop Makes Statement Following State of the Union Address

Congressman Rob Bishop, representative for Utah’s 1st District of which includes much of the Uintah Basin, made a statement following the 2020 State of the Union Address. “We are in the midst of an incredible time in America's history,” shares Bishop. “By almost any metric, Americans today are faring better than they were before 2016. We are safer and we are stronger, and I commend President Trump and his administration for creating an environment in which Americans can succeed. In Utah, nearly 150,000 jobs have been created since 2016, business is booming, and wages are increasing.

DWR Highlights Northeastern Utah Waters for Amazing Scenery and Great Fishing

By February, winter in Utah can feel never-ending but the Division of Wildlife Resources is recommending 3 Utah waters to enjoy with amazing scenery and great fishing and two of them are located in northeastern Utah. First on the list is Flaming Gorge Reservoir. "Flaming Gorge has a lot of awesome fishing opportunities in the winter," shares DWR Sportfish Coordinator Randy Oplinger. "The open water areas are great for those who like to fish from shore and boat, and ice anglers can fish the frozen areas.

Need a Date? Try a Blind Date With a Book at the Uintah County Library

Are you looking to do something a little fun and a little crazy for Valentine’s Day? How about a blind date? 43 percent of Americans have said that they have been on a blind date. Even though blind dates can certainly be an awkward experience, the Uintah County Library is hoping that the whole Basin will get in the spirit and have a Blind Date with a Book during the month of February. This unique experience has individuals select a wrapped book. Inside the wrapped book is a piece of paper that you will fill out once you read the book. Once you bring back the book and the paper to the front desk you are entered into the Blind Date with a Book raffle.

Two Cases of Colorado Mothers Arrested Connected to Drugs and Death of Child

Two separate cases out of western Colorado deal with mothers on drugs with tragic results. The Craig Daily Press reports that on January 26th a routine drug bust at the Colorado Inn in Craig resulted in officers finding a deceased infant in a backpack. 26-year-old Mikayla Diane Hoppe and 30-year-old Ronald Martin Chovanec were arrested on drug possession charges and later Hoppe was charged with concealing the death of an infant. The Moffat County Coroner estimated the deceased baby to be approximately 34 weeks along and likely a stillborn.

Daggett County Commissioners Share Monthly Update

The Daggett County Commissioners report that this week in their Commission meeting, they passed a new ordinance realigning the elected officials roster. As a result, the following offices will be on the upcoming election cycle in Daggett County: Recorder/Treasurer, Assessor, Clerk, Commissioner A (two year term), and Commissioner C (four year term). “Anyone interested in running for any of these positions must formally ‘declare’ between March 13th and the 19th,” shares the Commissioners.

The 2019 Santa’s Community Effort was a huge success. The Vernal Rotary Club recently thanked all who took tags from the trees and purchased gifts for local kids in need last Christmas making it possible to help 671 local children. The brains behind the operation are already looking ahead to make 2020 another great year and there’s an opportunity to help this month. Every year, the Vernal Rotary Club hosts a Casino Night fundraising event that helps fund Santa’s Community Effort for that year.

Dinosaur National Monument Presentation Made At Vernal Chamber Luncheon

Dinosaur National Monument Chief of Visitor Services Dan Johnson presented at the Vernal Chamber luncheon last week providing an update on the Monument’s happenings. Dinosaur National Monument covers 210,000 acres with a third of that in Utah and two-thirds in Colorado. The Monument received its International Dark Sky Certification in 2019 which has increased interest in the Park. In the last two years, the Monument has taken 15,000 students from around the globe on Virtual Field Trips, allowing students to see the Wall of Bones digitally.

USU Uintah Basin Professor Takes on Unique Study Topic

It is not often that a person can say they are doing something that has never been done before but a local Utah State University Uintah Basin associate biology professor can say just that. Charles Hanifin has spent twenty years, starting when he was a graduate student, developing an interest in “the coevolutionary relationship between toxic newts and the snakes that eat them.” While it was a topic of interest, USU’s lab did not have the resources and expertise to help Hanifin further his studies so he had to wait for a joint grant from the National Science Foundation and the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science.
