Duchesne County Sheriff Travis Tucker issued a press release on May 22nd reporting that on May 21st, at approximately 7:00 pm, inmate John Mooney was found lifeless in his cell from what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries. Life saving measures were unsuccessful and he passed away. John was a 54-year-old Duchesne County resident who was booked into the Jail on April 30th.
There was a substantial loss of property in a fire on Friday in Uintah County. The smoke could be seen for several miles from the structure fire in the area of 2500 South and 3200 East, the structure being described as a tractor shed.
A road tripping F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter jet made its way through the Uintah Basin as an Oversized load on Highway 40 on Friday. The F-117 left a military test range in Nevada on Thursday and was scheduled to arrive at its new home at the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum near Ashland, Nebraska by Sunday.
Starting today, TriCounty Health Department is offering free COVID-19 testing three days a week. TriCounty Health shared on Friday that the Vernal office will have weekly testing Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 11am. The Roosevelt office will have testing Monday and Wednesday from 8am to 11am.
Two men are dead and one man is in custody after a confrontation that took place Wednesday on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. Matthew Keenan Colorow Tapoof has been charged with two counts of second degree murder within Indian Country in U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.
A total eclipse of the moon will be visible from northeastern Utah on Wednesday, May 26th. According to Patrick Wiggins, NASA Solar System Ambassador to Utah, night owls and early risers in Utah will be treated to the first total eclipse of the Moon visible in Utah since January of 2019.
Ashley National Forest has provided some updates on roads with the request for all to stay safe while traveling forest roads. Ashley National Forest shared on Thursday that Red Cloud Loop (Forest Road 018) is fully passable with a 4×4 vehicle.

Those 8th graders finishing up the school year at Uintah Middle School are in for a special treat as their Principal Christy Nerdin is making the switch with them to the high school as the new Principal there.
Locals are familiar with the tradition of the annual Josie Shoot coming up in June but not everyone knows the history behind the event. The DWR shares that in 1988, Utah hunter education instructor Carole Jackson had a vision to encourage women of all ages in the Uintah Basin to use their newly acquired skills in a shooting competition.
