Fires have plagued Moffat County and western Colorado this week. On Tuesday, a home fire in Craig quickly spread causing firefighters to tear down part of the ceiling inside the home to reach the fire in the space between the ceiling and roof. Four people were inside the home at the time of the fire but all got out safely and damage to the inside of the home was kept to a minimum.
The latest recruit to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is known by only one letter. A 14-month-old German Shepherd named “Q” has joined current canine “Kimber” at the Duchesne County K-9 operations. Cpl. Morant Harrison has been assigned as Q’s canine handler and the pair are quickly becoming a great team.
A bill with the potential to save Utah taxpayers money moved through House Committee on Wednesday with a favorable recommendation. HR 5468 is Congressman Rob Bishop’s bill to allow the acceleration of capital repayments of a Utah water district to the federal government.

Two men involved in a home robbery in Vernal have been sentenced to prison. Last August, a trio of men entered a trailer home hoping to rob a safe they believed contained drugs and cash. They fled, leaving the homeowner stabbed and in critical condition, but the three men were later arrested. In March, 23-year-old Kaden Holmes pleaded guilty to reduced charges of attempted aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy while 25-year-old Lynn Richens pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated burglary and attempted criminal conspiracy.
Countless hours of volunteers and Uintah County employees have come together in the completion of a new nature park. Located on 11 acres at 1744 West 1500 North, the Ashley Nature Park features natural, wooded dirt trails, an asphalt walking loop, a covered pavilion, vault toilet and a kiosk created by the Uintah County Regional History Center featuring a history of the property. The Uintah County dedication announcement emphasizes the help of volunteers in seeing the park become a reality.
A unique museum in Duchesne County is rallying the community to see local history preserved into the future. The historic collection of Fred and Marie Pope, housed in what is called the “Pope House”, relies on the generosity of the community to keep afloat with an upcoming fundraiser that will provide treats, entertainment and even a blacksmith demonstration.
An Altamont cowboy is climbing the ranks in high school rodeo. BoDell Jessen, a senior at Altamont High School will be competing at the 68th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming later this month. BoDell qualified for the Utah team in bareback riding and calf roping.
Local boys baseball all stars teams are still riding the high of victory after succeeding at the championship tournament last week held in Beaver. Vernal’s 9 and under team battled their way to the 9U championship game after working their way up through the loser’s bracket having lost one game early on.
A grant program that has been utilized locally is once again accepting applications. The Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation awards grants to nonprofits, youth programs and local or tribal government agencies for outdoor programs or projects that directly benefit the public. “Each year we see increased participation in outdoor activities within our local communities,” shares Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation Tom Adams.
Vernal City Council approved amendments to the interlocal agreement between Uintah County, Vernal City and the Uintah Transportation Special Service District regarding operation of the Vernal Regional Airport. In presenting the amendments, Vernal City Manager Ken Bassett explained that the original agreement lacked specific language of how the Transportation District was to make payments, specifically to the airport project engineer GDA.
