KNEU 1250Many locals considered it a tragedy when Casa Rios Mexican Restaurant in Vernal closed its doors in 2015, a casualty of the failing economy. Tragedy has unfortunately struck again after a fire caused significant damage to the building on 2750 West Highway 40 on Friday night.
Social media has been swirling with rumors of large Basin fires with cases of news stories circulating that are out of date. The Uintah Basin Interagency Fire Center confirmed Friday afternoon that while there have been 2 to 5 little fires a day, there hasn’t been any of significance.

Dry grass and fireworks do not mix. According to Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian, fireworks were the cause of multiple fires on Flaming Gorge and the south Green River on Monday.
The Mill Creek Fire near Hayden, Colorado is slowly working toward containment. The fire was reportedly started on Saturday by an individual building a fire line with a bulldozer. The fire sparked and quickly spread and the bulldozer was destroyed.
If your home, farm or property in Duchesne or Uintah Counties have had items go missing recently, the thieves behind it may now be behind bars. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, 35-year-old Travis Kirk Cook and 29-year-old Shalae Jensen Cook are facing charges after detectives searched their home and located a cache of stolen antiques and memorabilia.
