KNEU 1250While not a huge leap, the Division of Wildlife Resources is looking to offer more cougar hunting permits this fall. Last season, hunters were allowed to take 531 cougars and biologists are recommending that hunters be allowed 565 this coming season.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has announced the dates for the treatment of Reader Creek to restore the cutthroat trout population. Reader Creek and Lynn Creek have both experienced dramatic decline in the cutthroat population due to competition and breeding with non-native trout. The decline has been so severe that the species’ future has been called into question. As a result, DWR biologists, partnered with Ashley National Forest, will chemically treat both streams with rotenone. “The treatment will remove brook trout that have established themselves in the streams,” explains the DWR. “Without intervention, biologists predict brook trout will completely replace cutthroat trout in the streams in less than 20 years.” Treatment within the Reader Creek drainage at Horseshoe and Sharlee Lakes will take place from July 18th to July 23rd. The area will be closed to public access and all use of the water including wading, fishing, and swimming will be prohibited. This also includes areas within 100 feet of Horseshoe and Sharlee Lakes and their outlets down to their confluence with Reader Creek and continuing downstream to Forest Service Road 110.
The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office reports that their deputies and detectives have seen an increase in theft and burglary calls in recent months. “Since April 1st we have responded to 46 theft or burglary complaints in communities throughout the county,” shares the announcement, “including 10 cases where a vehicle was stolen.” Some of the items were stolen from unlocked homes, buildings, or vehicles. “We are encouraging people to be vigilant about locking their doors and securing their property,” shares Lt. Jeremy Curry. “Some people think their stuff is already gone, so why bother reporting it. We need them to report it to us immediately. It helps us connect theft and burglary cases when we make an arrest, and helps us identify stolen property when we search a suspect’s home.” It is also recommended that people take photos of valuables and record serial numbers or identifying marks. The photos can be used to prove ownership and have property returned in the case of theft.
A newly passed defense spending bill is expected to strengthen Hill Air Force Base. Representative Rob Bishop says that the funding levels in H.R. 2810 are a vast improvement over recent years and will help address shortfalls that plagued the military under the Obama Administration. “Language contained in the bill also means Utah and Hill Air Force Base will continue in its critical role as a player in our national defense,” shares Bishop. “Full funding for the F-35 program and various construction projects at Hill secures the Base as the home of 5th generation fighters for a long time to come.” Bishop also says this directly enhances operations at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex and will also provide for construction of new facilities at Hill Air Force Base.
The annual Uintah Basin Car Show didn’t disappoint over the weekend. Between a poker run, night at the Drive In movie, and cruise around town, the streets of Roosevelt looked like a flash back to decades long passed. The Constitution Park provides the perfect venue every year for the car show with plenty of shade not only for spectators but room for the cars to park on the shaded grass. While there had been car shows in the past, local Kirk Campbell revived the event about a decade ago and the event has grown in the years since. Three-quarters of the cars featured annually come from outside the area including other states and even sometimes out of the country, shares Duchesne County Chamber Director Irene Hansen. “This is a well known event that is highly attended and of course a lot of locals come and just enjoy it.”
Theatre lovers are thrilled by the latest announcement from the Uintah Arts Council. Into the Woods was announced as the 2018 production of Outlaw Trail Theatre on the final night of their production of Singin’ In The Rain. “Many local actors and singers have been waiting a long time for this musical and everyone has been very excited!” shares Outlaw Trail Executive Producer Ron Litton. “Waiting will be the difficult part.” Auditions for the show will be held in April and rehearsals begin in May. There will be a cast of about 20 and the show will run from June 25th through July 7th. Outlaw Trail Theatre has been producing high quality “Broadway Under the Stars” community theatre for 31 years. Competition is likely to be fierce for coveted roles in Into The Woods due to its rise in popularity since Disney’s release of the movie in 2014.
Crooks are working to scam locals any way they can manage. The use of fake bills has increased in the Vernal area and anyone accepting cash for payment is urged to pay attention. The rodeo concession stands and the Hit Run Score fundraiser were reportedly both hit by the use of fake $100 dollar bills, among other places around town. Vernal City Police is investigating the cases, shares Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell, and confirms that fake $100 dollar bills were used at the rodeo. The Vernal City Police Department cautions businesses to be diligent and report any suspicious bills.
Some people only dream big while others live big dreams and that is exactly what the members and leaders of the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra have done in their first year as an organization.
State fire restrictions are to be taken seriously and local citations have been given out. Uintah County Fire Marshal Jeremy Raymond reports that, as an example, on Saturday alone multiple fires were started and several citations were issued.

The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge McKay Lucero issued a ruling on Tuesday in the latest appeal over the death of Ute Tribe member Todd Murray. Todd Murray was a passenger in a high speed chase in 2007 that ended within the Ute reservation.
