The first Vernal community fishing ponds are officially open
on June 1st
and officials are excited for the public to come see what they’ve been hard at work creating. The Old Fort Ponds are located in Maeser where the Old Fort Thornburgh used to sit. The site is 14 acres with 6 acres of fish filled ponds. There is so much to see, shares DWR Regional Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby, including artwork from UBTech as well as wildlife and the beauty of nature. The venue is aimed to accommodate seniors, children, and is handicap accessible. This is a wildlife management area so all are urged to respect the signs and neighbors. Fishing licenses are still needed but Free Fishing Day is coming up
on June 8th
as an option as well. There will not be a grand opening type event because there is not a lot of parking so officials are simply encouraging the public to come experience the ponds sometime this summer, rather than all at once on opening weekend. Finally, the best way to know if the ponds are open is if you drive by and the gates are open, then the ponds are open! If they are closed, the ponds are closed.
