Number of Wild Horses From Gathered Herd Die From Illness

The famous Sand Wash Basin herd of wild horses in Moffat County was gathered last fall with more than 2,500 wild horses taken to the Bureau of Land Management’s holding facility in Cañon City. According to the PostIndependent, 67 wild horses have died from ‘unknown illness’ since April 23 in the same facility. Though there are no precise metrics to know how many from the Sand Wash Basin herd were affected, a BLM spokesperson has said that it has been primarily the West Douglas population. Previous to the Sand Wash Basin gathering, the West Douglas gathering was the largest in Colorado history with 457 horses captured.
