The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office is spreading the word: Utah’s new E-Bike law takes effect today, May 6th. Here’s what you need to know: All e-bike and e-scooter riders under 21 must wear CPSC-approved helmets and all e-motorcycle riders under 21 must wear DOT-approved helmets. ALL devices that travel over 20 MPH without pedaling are considered an E-Motorcycle and may require a Driver’s License, Motorcycle Endorsement, and Insurance. There are age restrictions and those under 8 years old cannot ride any e-device on public roads while those under 16 years old cannot operate e-motorcycles or high-powered e-devices on public roads. The new law also includes something obvious but important for enforcement purposes: It is illegal to operate any e-device while impaired. The new law, passed as HB381 by the Utah legislature, aims to improve safety, especially for younger drivers. There have been tragic accidents across the state involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles and law enforcement is ready to enforce the newly implemented law for the safety of all.
