National Weather Service on Flooding Danger from Burn Scar, Need For Weather Station

The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office has delivered a clear message that deadly flash floods are a very real possibility in the area from Timber Canyon east to the Camelot/Strawberry Pinnacles area. National Weather Service Hydrologist Brian McInerney has explained that the storm on July 22nd dropped 1.5 inches of rain on part of the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar in just over an hour, sending a wall of water and debris down the Strawberry River stranding over 50 people and washing out the roadways. As a result, National Weather Service plans to install a weather monitoring station southwest of the burn scar to try to provide an early warning when storms move through the area. McInerney says they hope the weather station will be installed by late August and will remain in place for three years.
