Charges of Attempted Aggravated Murder have been filed in the incident in which a 35-year-old male and 28-year-old female were shot in a Naples residence on February 28th. According to the probable cause statement, 28-year-old Mara Ashley Anderson attempted to kill her brother and an adult female with a handgun by shooting them multiple times. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after noon to find the female victim laying in the open garage area at the residence near 1900 South 1800 East. The female victim had a large amount of blood coming from her lower body as well as a significant wound to her left hand. She told the officer that Anderson had shot her and left on foot to the south. Two females could be seen across the street and as one of them started walking back toward the officer, he recognized her as Anderson with a black wig and hat on. The Officer commanded her to stop and get onto the ground but Anderson did not listen. The Officer drew his firearm and when Anderson was within 5 feet of him, she reached into her bag and pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun. The Officer reached out and grabbed her and the gun and a struggle ensued. The gun was taken out of Anderson’s hands and tossed out of reach and then a second officer helped to cuff her as she resisted arrest. During this time, Anderson made multiple statements, including things like “I’m not going to prison”, “just kill me”, “I’m going to kill myself”, and “they came at me.” Anderson resisted being placed in the patrol vehicle by kicking, yelling, and striking her head against the window. At this time, her brother was being attended to on the lawn of a residence several houses down. It was found that he had been shot at least one time in the abdomen area while the female victim had sustained at least 2 gunshots resulting in multiple wounds. Both were transported to local hospitals and then were life flighted to University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City in critical condition with Anderson’s brother placed into a medical coma. The male and female victim’s 4-year-old son was located at a residence about a block away from the scene and it was determined that he had been inside the residence when the shooting occurred. At the hospital, the female victim told police that an argument about picking up Anderson’s mother at the airport caused her to pull out the gun and start shooting. Anderson lived in the home with the two victims. She is charged with 2 counts of 1st Degree Felony Attempted Aggravated Murder and other felony charges, including Assault of a Peace Officer and Domestic Violence in the Presence of a Child. Anderson has a criminal history which includes convictions of DUI, multiple incidents of Assault Against a Peace Officer, and more.
