A man arrested for DUI in Vernal City this week injured a police officer during the arrest. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, police were dispatched on a call that a vehicle had struck a fence on 600 North in Vernal and left the scene. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a stop. The driver, 42-year-old Bryce D. Bell, told police he had methamphetamine. While being placed in handcuffs, Bell tensed up and stated, “Wait, how do I know you guys are cops?” Both officers were in full uniform with badges clearly displayed. He resisted arrest and said someone was following him and he was in fear for his life and that was why he ran off the road and hit the fence. While resisting arrest, Bell struck one of the officers causing substantial bodily injury to the officer’s bottom lip. Once secured in handcuffs, Bell was asked if he had any weapons on him. He said he had a pocket knife. A search revealed a holster in his front pocket but when asked where the firearm was, Bell said he did not know. A fully loaded 9mm magazine was found in Bell’s other pocket. A 9mm handgun was located inside Bell’s vehicle. Among the items that were dropped on the road while Bell resisted arrest was a broken glass pipe with methamphetamine in it. Bell was taken into custody and is charged with 2nd Degree Felony Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Restricted Person, DUI, Assault on a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Interfering with a Peace Officer, and Failure to Duties at a Vehicle Accident.
