The Lady Utes Softball team finished off their season with a 2nd place finish at state. The 4A state championship took place last week at the Salt Lake Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville. The Lady Utes fought hard and found themselves in the championship match with the Spanish Fork lady Dons. The Dons were coming in from an amazing tournament so far having only allowed 1 run to that point in the tournament. Worn down from the games leading up to the championship, Summer Stensgard pitched very well still setting the tone for the Lady Utes by leading off with a single followed by a homer by Whit Alexander. The Dons quickly came back but the lady Utes were ready to meet them and in the second inning scored two homers to tie the Dons. The teams went back and forth with the Utes building to a 10 to 8 victory meaning a second game would determine the state champion. The game was the third in a row for the lady Utes and pitcher Summer Stensgard was nearly spent but still opened the game giving her all. Madie Luck had to step in to relieve Summer. In the last three innings the Dons scored 12 runs. The final score was 17 to 5 meaning the lady Utes took 2nd at the state championship. The lady Utes scored more runs on the Dons in two games than the entire rest of the region had. Congratulations lady Utes softball on the amazing state play and 2nd place finish!
