Duchesne Fire Department: Remember The Importance Of Safety On Ice

The Duchesne Fire Department has another important safety tip for the public, this time as anglers are trying to enjoy what window of time they may have for ice fishing on Uintah Basin waters. The top piece of advice is simple: There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice. If you don’t know how to measure the thickness and determine how safe it is, do not go onto the ice! The general rule shared by weather.gov is that ice at least 4 inches thick can support ice fishing and walking, at least 5 inches thick supports small groups and ice skating, at least 6 inches thick supports snowmobiles or ATVs. It’s also important to know that ice strength can also vary in different areas of the same body of water. If heading out, take a cell phone and be sure someone knows where you are and when you are expected to return. Look for clear ice, which is generally stronger than ice with snow on it or bubbles in it. For the complete safety message, visit the Duchesne Fire Department Facebook page.
