KNEU 1250This Saturday, local agencies are hosting Drug Take Back events around the Uintah Basin where expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped off, no questions asked. Pills and patches are accepted. Liquids, needles, or sharps are not. This is the 16th opportunity that Drug Take Back has been offered locally.
The Uintah County Library is so much more than a place to check out books for the Teen Advisory Council and other youth that attend activities. Librarian Amber Lynch loves working with these youth and providing a place for them to belong. “It keeps the teens off the streets and safe from doing other things that can get them into trouble or worse,” shares Lynch.
A Washington man charged early this year with Human Trafficking and Sexual Servitude of a Minor after being arrested at Little America on I-80 in Sweetwater County has been sentenced to federal prison. 63-year-old David Peter Vier was arrested on January 20th after deputies responded to a call of two girls hiding from a man in the restaurant of Little America Hotel.
A search of a home in Duchesne resulted in the arrest of three men who are now facing drug charges. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, complaints from the public about possible drug activity at 175 West 400 South prompted sheriff’s deputies to conduct extra patrols in the neighborhood. A search warrant for the house was obtained last week following a traffic stop in Duchesne, shares Lt. Monty Nay. A driver was stopped for running a stop sign and the officer could smell the odor of marijuana.
Warm your heart while freezing your butt off at the 2018 Polar Plunge in Rangely, Colorado. The event is raising money for the Special Olympics of Colorado and it is a $250 dollar minimum donation to jump as a team.
The deer hunt opener was good in some areas and slow in others, according to the Division of Wildlife Resources. Snow is likely what made the difference during opening weekend of the general rifle buck deer hunt as the colder temperatures pushed deer out of the high country and into areas where hunters had an easier time finding them.
Recently, Uintah Basin Healthcare earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification. Through the efforts of the Engineering staff, the UBH facilities perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. Commercial buildings that earn this certification use an average of 35 percent less and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide then similar buildings.
It’s been a year since Roger Brooks secret-shopped the Vernal area and gave specific feedback on ways to improve visitor appeal and boost tourism. Local agencies took many suggestions to heart and the evidence is now popping up in the form of improved signage and a wayfinding system. Among the items are dinosaur themed blade signs now seen on businesses in downtown Vernal.
While the state unemployment rate ticked up this month, county unemployment rates in northeastern Utah have moved slightly down. Daggett County and Duchesne County are both down from 4.7 to 4.6 percent unemployment. Uintah County remained at 4.9 percent unemployment for the third month in a row.
Tragically a pregnant crash victim and her unborn son died on Tuesday as a result of critical injuries sustained from a head-on collision on Highway 40 that took place Saturday. The driver responsible for the crash, 22-year-old Tyson Uresti, was charged on Monday in 4th District Court with felony Transfer of a Stolen Vehicle, misdemeanor Failure to Remain at an Accident Involving Injury, Reckless Driving, Failure to Stay in One Lane, and No Valid Driver’s License.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources reminds members of the Uintah Basin that it is illegal to introduce fish – including aquarium species – by releasing any species into a Utah pond, stream or lake. Also included as illegal is transporting live fish from one water to another and fishing with live bait.
State unemployment has ticked up slightly while national unemployment has ticked down. The Department of Workforce Services reports that state unemployment was revised upward two-tenth to 3.9 percent for the month of September while national unemployment dropped two-tenths from the month before to 3.7 percent.
