KNEU 1250The PRCA was quick to acknowledge a special win at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo that took place over the weekend at Western Park in Vernal. Roosevelt cowboy Rhen Richard won the tie-down roping competition at the rodeo, a success that he hopes to build upon. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks,” shared Richard in the PRCA ProRodeo.com highlight.

Utah’s Watershed Restoration Initiative (WRI) has announced 121 wildland restoration and rehabilitation projects throughout the state that will be in the upwards of $36 million dollars. In all, these projects will improve over 173,000 acres of land. The DNR will coordinate the projects. DNR watershed program director Tyler Thompson states, “Healthy watersheds are vital to Utah’s effort to proactively manage the state’s natural resources, including prevention of catastrophic wildfire, improved habitat for wildlife and the increased yield and quality of water.”
A wet spring leads to green grass, beautiful flowers and an uptick in the mosquito population. Every county is doing what they can and Daggett County will be doing an aerial spray over a couple of days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aerial spraying, when done correctly, has no effect on people, pets and the environment. It will not cause asthma attacks as it only puts around 1 to 2 ounces of chemical per acre.
Sometimes it takes a community to put a stop to crime and the Vernal PD is asking for the area’s communities to help. Vernal Police Department has shared images of some men and a truck they are seeking to identify. The images show the criminal behavior of the men cutting the lock off a security fence. In other photos they are seen taking items that were behind the fence.Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell confirms that the pickup in the security images is a Dodge Ram Dually. Campbell says the crime took place several weeks ago and the images show the thieves cutting a fence and taking items from a local store. It takes a village to raise a child or so the saying goes. In Utah we take this adage seriously as a mandatory reporting state, meaning when you see something such as abuse, it is mandated that you say something. Northeastern Utah Avian Education Center and Aviary is showing their love of all animals by presenting a mammal program. This free event will provide the public with some fun interactions with hands-on displays. There will be large collections of antlers, pelts, skulls and much more.
Pedestrian lights have become part of the flow on Highway 40 in Roosevelt and Vernal but some drivers are still getting used to their presence. Roosevelt City Police Department shared a safety reminder on Wednesday stating that there has been confusion over the pedestrian lights at 200 East and 100 South in Roosevelt. “When activated by a pedestrian, the lights flash yellow, letting drivers know to let pedestrians cross,” shares Roosevelt PD.
While the community is grateful for new recruits to local law enforcement, that gratitude may not compare to the excitement garnered when the new recruit is a furry, four-legged friend. The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office introduced the community via Facebook to their newest team member Simba, a two-year-old bloodhound that is trained in scent detection.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources reminds the public to leave nests alone in certain conditions. Recently, DWR had to intervene when a person covered a nest with a net separating the babies from the parents. DWR Sergeant Sean Spencer states that “people are welcome to prevent birds from nesting on or in their homes, but you have to do it before nesting season begins.
The Hospitality Committee in Uintah County is recognizing the faces of customer service in local businesses. The new DinoSOAR customer service award recipient is a well-known friendly face at the Sherwin-Williams paint store. Andrea Snow is the Sherwin-Williams store manager. One of her great contributions to the community has been helping with the downtown dinosaur murals in Cobble Rock Park by gathering all the paint and supplies donated for that project.
Most Basin travelers have come to expect some delays while traveling Highway 40 through the construction in Strawberry Valley and the latest UDOT update indicates those delays will continue. This week, crews started temporary striping to prepare for the asphalt removal between Mile Post 46 and 48. Pilot car operations have been in use for traffic control leading to obvious travel delays.
